DIY Handprint Flag Patriotic Shirt {Craft}

Painted Flag Shirt For 4th of July

Today’s crafty idea is all about a DIY handprint flag patriotic shirt Lil Man and I made together, for him to wear to some upcoming celebrations we are planning on attending soon.

I first saw the DIY idea on Pinterest and instantly knew I wanted {needed} to make one for him.

Not only is this DIY shirt idea great for any patriotic event throughout the year {think 4th of July, Veterans Day and Memorial Day} but it also makes for a great keepsake to gift to someone as well.

There has been several occasions where I wanted a patriotic themed shirt for Lil Man {deployments, military graduations, homecoming celebrations} but never could find something I absolutely loved, in my price range or even remotely cute for boys in his size.

Well – least not till now! For about $7 I solved all my problems and made a one-of-a-kind shirt that literally took us a few minutes from start to finish!

If you would like to make one with your child today {or maybe make a shirt for yourself instead} find all the crafty details below. My best suggestion for the supplies is Walmart 🙂

Happy crafting, my dear friends! Please don’t forget to share pictures of your flag inspired shirts on our Facebook page to admire from a far! #gluedtomycrafts

DIY Handprint Flag Patriotic Shirt {Craft}

Get your kids in the patriotic spirit this summer with this easy to follow tutorial! Learn how to make a handprint flag patriotic shirt that everyone will love.

Craft Supplies:

  • Plain White Shirt
  • Red Fabric Paint
  • Blue Fabric Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Cardboard {a cereal box flattened will work!}
  • Paper Plate
  • Baby Wipes

Directions:

  • First things first – place a piece of cardboard inside your shirt where you will be making your flag design. This is so the paint won’t bleed to the other side of your shirt.
  • Decide where the handprint will go on the front of the shirt. Practice with your child so they know what is expected from them.
  • Now squirt some blue fabric paint on a paper plate.
  • Using a large paint brush, paint some blue paint the palm and fingers of your child’s hand.
  • Have them immediately press it on the shirt.
  • Be sure to wiggle each finger so the paint really transfers.
  • Lift up their hand to reveal the handprint design underneath.
  • Use baby wipes to clean off excess paint from their hand {and send them for a quick trip to the sink for good washup!}
  • Next up – make red stripes next to the blue handprint.
  • If desired, paint a red heart inside the blue handprint as well.
  • At this point in time, you can also use a small paint brush to do some touch ups if need be on the blue hand print design.
  • When done decorating the shirt, let the fabric paint dry completely being wearing or washing.
  • Be sure to follow washing directions on back of fabric paint container. For good measure, wash the fourth of July shirt inside out.
  • Now wear your shirt proudly on the BIG day!
