Paper Plate Rainbow Fish Craft

Today’s paper plate fish craft is inspired by the book Rainbow Fish. It’s an award-winning book about a beautiful fish who finds friendship and happiness when he learns to share. It’s such a great story for any age. The colors in the book are vibrant & beautiful – just like tropical fish in real life.

After reading the story to my son, I decided we needed to make a craft to go along with the story. That is how our Tropical Paper Plate Fish craft was born. It’s really simple to create this fish craft & it will look absolutely great on a fridge – just saying!

If you would like to recreate this tissue paper covered fish craft with your child today, you can find all the details you need to know in our full tutorial below! Hopefully I’ve laid it out pretty simple and you can recreate it with ease!

So I’ll let you get to it. Happy crafting and making beautiful colored fish with your child! I just know you are going to have a blast together!

Get your little ones’ creative juices flowing with this fun and easy tropical fish craft idea! Ask them to grab some paper plates and tissue paper, then let their imaginations take it from there.

Craft Supplies:

  • Large Paper Plate – 1 per craft
  • Craft Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Colored Tissue Paper
  • White School Glue
  • Large Wiggle Eyes – 1 per craft

Directions:

  • To make your fish, first cut a wedge/triangle out of your plate. {any size will work} The triangle you cut out will be the tail of the fish, while the hole in the plate will be the mouth. It will kinda look like Pac-Man.
  • Now glue or staple your cut out triangle to the plate, to give it the look of a fish tail.
  • Cut or tear your tissue paper into squares. {The more colors you have – the more vibrant your fish will be!}
  • Cover the entire paper plate fish with school glue and hand over to your child.
  • Now ask them to place the tissue paper all over the fish. As they are adding the tissue paper, you can add more glue.
  • Once the fish is completely covered – glue on the wiggle eye to give it some life.
  • And that’s it! You now have your own vibrant colored Paper Plate Tropical Rainbow Fish piece to display proudly for all to see!
  • If you want to hang them, punch a hole on the top & string some yarn through the hole OR just hang it on the fridge to display.

You can also add various colored paper punches, confetti or stickers for a one of kind look. As long as you have the fish cut out & some imagination – you are good to go!
