Spring is a season of wonderful transformations. As the world outside blossoms with color, it’s the perfect time to bring that same creative energy indoors. On that note, today’s Handprint & Popsicle Stick Butterfly craft is more than just a fun activity; it’s a way to capture a moment in time.

Those little handprints won’t stay little for long, making this project a cherished keepsake you’ll look back on for years to come.

Our short tutorial will guide you through creating a beautiful butterfly that holds a sweet poem, making it an ideal gift for Mother’s Day, spring, or just a cheerful decoration to brighten your home. It’s a simple, heartwarming project perfect for an afternoon of family fun.

Craft Supplies:

Before you begin your crafting adventure, gather these simple supplies. Most of these items are likely already in your craft bin, making this an easy and accessible project for everyone.

  • Jumbo Popsicle Sticks (one per butterfly)
  • Butterfly Poem Printable – from our spring landing page
  • Colored Cardstock or Construction Paper (for the wings)
  • White Cardstock (for the poem)
  • Fine-Tipped Black Marker
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • School Glue or a Glue Stick
  • Optional Decorative Supplies: Glitter, glitter glue, small rhinestones, sequins, or stickers

Directions:

Let’s bring your beautiful butterfly to life! Follow these simple steps to create your own handprint masterpiece.

  • Take a piece of colored cardstock and fold it in half.
  • Place your child’s hand on the folded paper, with their thumb and index finger close to the fold.
  • Trace around their hand with a pencil.
  • Carefully cut out the traced shape, keeping the paper folded. When you unfold it, you’ll have two symmetrical handprints connected in the middle, which will form one set of wings.
  • Next up – take one jumbo popsicle stick – this will be the butterfly’s body.
  • Glue your handprint wings to the back of the popsicle stick.
  • Use your black marker to draw a simple, happy smiley face at the top of the popsicle stick.
  • Print and cut out one of the circular tags from our poem printable.
  • Glue it to the center of the popsicle stick.
  • Now, let your creativity fly! Decorate the handprint wings with glitter glue, sequins, or small stickers. There are no rules here, so encourage your little one to add their own artistic flair.
  • For an extra touch, you can glue on googly eyes and attach a small piece of a pipe cleaner to the back of the popsicle stick for antennae.

“With my hand, I made a butterfly, To flutter and dance as the days go by.

A little reminder of springtime cheer, And the love I send when I’m not near!”

Creating this popsicle stick butterfly is a wonderful way to connect with your children and celebrate the beauty of spring. Each one will be a unique reflection of your child’s personality and a tangible reminder of the love you share. As it flutters on a shelf or hangs on the wall, it will bring a smile to your face and a little bit of springtime cheer, no matter the season.
