A colorful, handmade cactus craft with a glue bottle, hearts, and decorative paper.

Create a heartfelt and unique Mother’s Day card with this simple torn paper cactus craft idea. It’s a wonderful project for kids to make a personal gift that shows just how much they appreciate Mom.

This craft uses simple materials and results in a beautiful, textured piece of art. Plus, we’ve included a free printable message to make your card extra special!

Craft Supplies:

One of the great things about this craft is that it requires only simple and affordable materials. You might already have most of them at home or in the classroom.

  • Green Construction Paper
  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Cactus Printable – on our landing page
  • School Glue
  • Small Paper
  • Black Craft Paint
  • Plastic Fork
  • Red Craft Paint
  • Baby Wipes
  • Embellishments

Directions:

Follow these easy steps to create your beautiful cactus card:

  • First, prepare a clean and organized workspace. Lay out all your materials so the kids can easily access everything. This makes the torn paper cactus activity more manageable, especially if you’re working with a group.
  • Start by downloading and printing the free cactus printable onto a single sheet of white cardstock. This will serve as the base for your craft.
  • Help your child tear the green construction paper into small pieces. The pieces don’t need to be perfect; the uneven edges add charm and character to the cactus! This step is great for building fine motor skills.
  • Using school glue, have your child carefully glue the torn green paper pieces inside the cactus outline on the printable. Encourage them to fill the space and enjoy the process. Remind them that the goal isn’t perfection – it’s about having fun and creating something unique!
  • Now it’s time to add the spikes! Pour a small amount of black craft paint onto a paper plate. Show your child how to dip a plastic fork into the paint and press it onto the paper-covered cactus. Encourage them to make several marks all over to create the look of cactus spikes.
  • Once the spikes are done, it’s time to add the flowers! Pour a small amount of pink craft paint onto a paper plate. Guide the children to dip their index finger into the paint and press it onto the cactus. Repeat this step to create multiple flowers across the cactus design.
  • At this point in time, you can also add any other embellishments you see fit.
  • When done decorating, allow the glue and craft paint to dry completely before handling the craft. This ensures everything stays in place and looks its best.
  • Once the cactus crafts are finished, it’s time to show them off! If you’re in a classroom, dedicate a space on your bulletin board to display the students’ beautiful creations. At home, you can frame the art or place it somewhere special to admire.

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
