This is a great kids craft idea that is perfect for hippopotamus lovers of all ages. It’s simple, easy, and most importantly- lots of fun! Try it out today!

Craft Supplies:

  • Large Paper Plate
  • Scissors
  • Gray Paint Crayon
  • Gray Cardstock Paper
  • Hippo Printable – on our landing page
  • Large Googly Eyes
  • School Glue
  • Stapler

Directions:

  • First things first – cut your large paper plate in half. Straight up the center to make TWO equal halves.
  • Reserve one for your hippo craft and save the other for another day {perhaps even using it for our Paper Plate Umbrella tutorial}
  • Now grab your gray paint crayon and “paint” the entire paper plate piece completely gray.
  • Set it aside till the last step.
  • If you haven’t already, go ahead and print out the hippo head shape on a single sheet of grey cardstock paper.
  • Use scissors to trim out the head shape from the template.
  • Before you discard the excess paper, go ahead and cut out four, long rectangle leg pieces.
  • To finish off the paper plate animal craft – simply staple on the cardstock paper hippo face piece to the painted paper plate, along with the legs.
  • Follow that up by gluing on the wiggle eyes so it can see.
  • Go ahead and add any other embellishments you see fit, before you display your adorable hippo proudly for all to see!

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
