Peacock Craft For Kids

Happy Thursday my friends! Today’s handprint & wood scoop stick peacock puppet craft tutorial is actually inspired by a post I shared with you all last year around Thanksgiving time {Handprint Turkey} on Glued To My Crafts.

After looking through my archives the other day and trying to draw up some inspiration for the blog, it dawned on me that I could easily remake that particular idea from the past and turn it into something that can be done ALL year long with ease. Hence – how today’s Scoop Stick Peacock Puppet tutorial was born.

Whether you make them as a simple afternoon craft to pass the time or intend to use them as puppets like we did – these beautiful Paper & Wooden Stick Peacocks are super easy, really inexpensive and of course – fun for ALL ages! So grab those craft supplies, check out the directions below and get to work my friends!!

Happy crafting! Please don’t forget to share pictures of your paper handprint and scoop stick peacock puppets with us on our Facebook page!! #gluedtomycrafts

This handprint peacock puppet craft is perfect for kids of all ages! It’s a great way to teach them about colors and patterns.

Craft Supplies:

  • Blue Cardstock Paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Wooden Scoop Sticks
  • Blue Craft Paint
  • Paper Plate
  • Paint Brush
  • Craft Feathers
  • Loose Craft Glitter
  • School Glue
  • Small Wiggle Eyes
  • Orange Cardstock Paper

Directions:

  • First things first – pick a hand!
  • Grab the pencil and blue colored cardstock paper.
  • Instruct your child to lay their hand {and little fingers} completely flat on the paper.
  • Go ahead and use the pencil to trace your child’s hand {one handprint per wood stick peacock puppet} on the blue cardstock.
  • Now use the scissors to trim out the traced design.
  • Up next – the fun part. DECORATING! Have children decorate their handprint cutout however they want. We did a ton of feathers and loose craft glitter on ours but you can use whatever you like to make it stand out from the crowd!
  • While your child is working on that, go ahead and squirt your craft paint on the paper plate.
  • Paint the craft stick completely blue.
  • At this point in time you can also cut out a very small triangle for the peacock’s beak.
  • Go ahead and glue the beak & small wiggle eyes onto the painted scoop stick.
  • When your child is done decorating their handprints, glue the decorated wooden scoop to the front of the cutout.
  • Then let the finished paper peacock puppet dry completely, in an undisturbed area, before displaying/playing with proudly!
  • Repeat the above steps over and over again to make a whole bunch of peacock puppets!
  • Don’t forget to snap a few pictures of your child’s finished pretty peacock with handprint feathers with us on your various social media sites! #gluedtomycrafts

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
