Hands down, the absolutely BEST decorations for fall are pumpkins. Am I right?
Whether you carve them or just sit them on the porch for goods looks – they are a must {am I right?!} I repeat – they are a MUST. In my opinion anyways…
Another must? Involving my son in the holiday decorating process. After – all, he’s a boy and in a few years he’s going to scream “but MOM!” and I’m going to miss the times he just “went along with it.” Plus I just like having the keepsakes for years to come.
So last week I purchased some mini pumpkins/gourds at the grocery store.
When we got home I brought out my paint collection and brushes. Lil Man and I then set up shop on the dining room table and we gave those pumpkins a unique look. {Loved that we could do it together!}
I absolutely love how our painted pumpkins turned out and wish I could save them for future years. Maybe next year I will buy fake pumpkins to paint. Till then, I will just admire the ones we decorated.
Just squirt some paint on a paper plate and grab some brushes. Just note – the brighter the colors, the more vibrant your pumpkins will look. Once your done with your pumpkin masterpieces, set aside to let dry completely before displaying proudly.
I originally had glitter set out for us to use, but decided to wait. Since I have our pumpkins sitting on the tv stand for now, Lil Man likes to grab them and play with them. No sense of having glitter all over the place this year ;)
Are you decorating/carving pumpkins this year? I wanna see pictures if you do! Share some pictures on our Facebook page. I’m still researching to see when we will head to Colorado to a local pumpkin patch. I’m still determined to carve a few pumpkins as well. #gluedtomycrafts

Hi Mo – honestly any age is great :) My son was around 3 years old when I wrote this post. If children can hold a paint brush, I think they will do great!

What ages do you think this is best for? Particularly using the mini pumpkins

I love your ideas! I don’t have any littles but often use your ideas for Seniors in the living center I work at!
Keep them coming!

Cute! I’ve gotta try it with my 14 mo. old. These would make great gifts for grandparents.

DO NOT USE TEMPERA!!! we painted pumpkins in my class and i used that because we have a bigger variety of tempera and it was awesome until they dried over the weekend and i came back to the paint all flaked off of the pumpkin…but today i washed off the flakes and we did it again but with acrylic and it worked well. the only bad thing is that its not too washable so make them wear paint shirts and wash hands when they’re finished. good luck!!

I was wondering what kind of paint you’d recommend? I want to do a project like this in a preschool room I am working in and can’t decide what sort of paint to buy! They have tempera paint but we all worry that paint will flake off, my next best guess was acrylic? Any input would be appreciated!

What type of paint would you use?
Stacey says
I would give it a good hour for the paint to dry. You can always have plastic baggies on hand to place them in, so parents can take them home safely.

love this! Thank you for all of the pics and description! I want to do this for my daughters first birthday party, for all the little babies he will be coming. Do you remember how long it took for the paint to dry on the mini pumpkins? I’d like the children to be able to take them home at the end of the party.
