This Valentine’s Day Flower Craft transforms a simple paper plate into a vibrant bloom using the delightful technique of paint splatting. It’s a wonderful project for toddlers and preschoolers who enjoy getting a little messy while expressing their creativity.

The process is just as fun as the final product, which makes a lovely gift for a parent, grandparent, or teacher.

A colorful paper craft featuring a red and pink painted paper plate with yellow circles in the center, green handprint cutouts as leaves, surrounded by craft supplies, heart decorations, and paint bottles.

Let’s dive in and create some heartfelt flowers that are perfect for celebrating love. This tutorial will guide you through turning basic craft supplies into a stunning piece of Valentine’s art!

Craft Supplies:

  • Small White Paper Plates – 1 per craft
  • Tulip Puffy Paint – 2 to 3 colors – red, purple and pinks
  • Loose Craft Glitter
  • Yellow Dot Stickers
  • Green Cardstock Paper
  • Pencil
  • Craft Scissors
  • School Glue
  • Baby Wipes

Directions:

A friendly heads-up: This craft can get a little messy when the paint is squished, so be sure to protect your work surface! The paint will also need some time to dry before you can finish assembling your flower.

  • Start by folding your paper plate directly in half, like a taco. You’ll need one folded plate for each flower you plan to make.
  • Unfold the plate. On one side of the center crease, squeeze 2-3 different colors of puffy paint. A few light squiggles of each color will do – try not to add too much!
  • Now for the fun part! Fold the paper plate back in half, squishing the paint inside. Gently rub your hands over the folded plate to spread the paint and mix the colors. Some paint might ooze out the sides, so keep those baby wipes handy for a quick cleanup.
  • Carefully open your folded plate to see the beautiful marbled design you’ve created!
  • Set the painted plate aside in a safe place to dry completely. This may take a few hours, so patience is key. The paint must be fully dry before you move on to the next step.
  • Once the paint is dry, grab your scissors, a pencil and green cardstock paper.
  • Trace/cut out TWO handprint cutouts for the leaves of the flower.
  • Go ahead and glue those to the back of your decorated paper plate piece.
  • The last step is the easiest – add several yellow dot stickers in the center of the design.
  • That’s it! Your colorful paint splat flower paper plate craft is ready to be displayed for everyone to admire.
