Spookley The Square Pumpkin Canvas

Today we are sharing a canvas and popsicle stick craft idea that is perfect to go along with the book character “Spookley The Square Pumpkin.”

Hopefully you like our “outside the box” pumpkin canvas idea and it comes in handy for you while doing storytime, this time of year!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Canvas - Kid Craft

Confession time. Originally I had no intention of sharing this story time craft idea with you all.

You see… I’m my worst critic and A LOT of my crafty ideas never make it into a full blog post on Glued To My Crafts. A LOT of things get scrapped, deleted and thrown away. It’s pretty depressing to even write that….

Anyways – long story short, this particular pumpkin canvas idea was something that came to my mind awhile ago {without the wiggle eyes and smile} but the vision just wasn’t coming together for me in real life. My “plan” was that kids would make this with their parents and then it could be turned into a wreath decoration by hot gluing a ribbon to the back. Then you just display it with your wreath, on the door and call it good.

After playing around with it for days, I just didn’t love it.

My door and the wreath, were just not cutting it for pictures that I felt were good enough to present to you all with and the words for the tutorial were falling flat, as well. I drew a blank and hated it.

But before I threw my finished piece away, I figured I would share some quick picture snaps in my Facebook group from my phone {in hopes it might inspire someone still} and not call it a complete waste but I was ready to move on to the next thing.

Well… that day someone suggested that my piece looked like Spookley The Square Pumpkin {thank you Kloe!}

Then it clicked! Which brings us to today! With all that being said, I hope the reason YOU clicked over is because you love it too! So check out the quick tutorial below and make one yourself as well! I encourage this craft for older kids {because of the hot glue element} but with parental supervision, I could see younger kids recreating it as well. This give you that excuse to do a FAMILY CRAFT together!

As always – happy crafting, my friends! Don’t forget to grab and read your copy of a Spookley book as well! #gluedtomycrafts

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Canvas - Kid Craft Spookley The Square Pumpkin Canvas - Kid Craft

Craft Supplies:

  • White Blank Square Canvas {mine measures 8 inches by 8 inches}
  • Jumbo Popsicle Sticks {9 per craft}
  • Brown/Orange Craft Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Paper Plate
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Black Tulip Puffy Paint
  • Large Wiggle Eyes {2 per craft}
  • Decorative Bow

Directions:

  • Squirt some orange/brown craft paint on your paper plate. Paint your canvas completely brown, while paint your EIGHT out of nine jumbo popsicle sticks completely orange. The ONE lonely popsicle stick should be painted brown. Set them all aside to let them dry.
  • When your pieces are dry enough, get the glue gun hot and ready!
  • Remember that single leftover popsicle stick? Hot glue it to the back of your painted canvas. This will be the stem of the pumpkin.
  • Now hot glue the remaining painted popsicle sticks onto the canvas. All of them in a line, next to each other, like a fence.
  • Once the popsicle sticks are down, hot glue the wiggle eyes in place {along with the decorative bow!}
  • Finish off the craft by using black Tulip paint to draw on a smile for Spookley.
  • Then set it all aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly!!!
