Pink Watermelon Slice Craft

One of the things I love about my “job” is that inspiration can hit anywhere. And I’m talking ANYWHERE!

Take for example when I recently went to Lil Man’s scholastic book fair event at his preschool. As I scanned all the books that were available for purchase on the tables, I instantly started to brainstorm various kid craft ideas we could do in honor of our new favorite finds and of course, share it on the blog {life of a blogger – am I right?!}

And let me tell ya – as soon as I came across the book The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli, the clouds parted and angels started singing. No joke – it was best crafty inspiration ever and it was a no brainer that this book was coming home with us.

So if you haven’t guessed already – that is exactly how today’s kid friendly Paper Plate Watermelon tutorial came to life. On that note, I’m so excited to be sharing this easy & really inexpensive watermelon craft with you all today. I sure hope you take the time to recreate it with your child, as well as grabbing the mentioned book above to read along in celebration. Who knows – you might even find yourself munching on some yummy watermelon afterwards.

Happy crafting, my friends! Don’t forget to share pictures of your watermelon slices made from paper plates and tissue paper, by tagging us on Instagram! #gluedtomycrafts

Tissue Paper & Paper Plate Watermelon - Kid Craft Idea

Get inspired with this easy and creative kids craft idea – a tissue paper and paper plate watermelon slice! Perfect for summertime fun.

Craft Supplies:

  • Large Paper Plate
  • Pink Tissue Paper
  • Green Craft Paint
  • Black Craft Paint
  • Two Small Paint Brushes
  • School Glue
  • Kid Friendly Scissors
  • Paint Dish or Small Container

Directions:

  • First cut your large paper plate in half. Straight up the center to create TWO equal pieces. You can either use both halves for this craft or reserve one for later.
  • Now squirt some green paint in your paint dish.
  • Using a small paint brush, have children paint the outside rim of their paper plate half, green. This is the rim of the watermelon.
  • While they are working on that, cut the pink tissue paper into small squares.
  • Once the outside rim of the watermelon is completely painted, have children place some glue in the inside of the paper plate and have children place the pink tissue paper on top of the glue, until the center is completely covered.
  • To finish off the Paper Plate Watermelon craft – have children dip another small paint brush into some black paint and then onto the area of the pink tissue paper on the watermelon to give the look of seeds. Repeat a few times to make watermelon seeds on the craft.
  • Then let it all dry completely before displaying proudly!

Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible.
