A little back story of why I recently came up with this paper plate sunflower tutorial.
Sunflowers always seem to put a smile on my face {well – flowers in general seem to do the trick!}
Although sunflowers are commonly associated with summer – I always think back to four years ago this timeframe, when we were passing through Kansas on our move to Wyoming.
In between each town, were fields FULL of blooming sunflowers. Some were so top heavy that they were leaning over the fences. Just typing up this very post gives me butterflies all over again. Maybe it was the sense of a new adventure or the morning sickness from being pregnant – regardless, I always think back to that beautiful scenery. {and wish I would have taken pictures!}
So if you haven’t guessed, today’s post is all about sunflowers! And of course – it’s an easy, kid friendly Paper Plate Sunflower idea. Lil Man & I did this craft last week and it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon together. It has multiple steps, so it’s great to do in stages. And with all the fabulous kid books out there, centered around sunflowers – you can really make it into a great learning lesson too!

Paper Plate Sunflower Supplies:
* Large Paper Plate {one per sunflower craft}
* Yellow Tissue Paper
* Yellow Colored Cardstock
* Black Glitter Glue
* School Glue
* Kid Friendly Craft Scissors
* Hand-Held Stapler
Directions:
* First cut your yellow tissue paper into small squares. Set them aside.
* Next, cut out your sunflower petals from the yellow cardstock.
* Take your petals and staple them to the outside rim of the paper plate. {Trust me – do this first!}
* Now slather a good amount of glue all over the inside of the plate. Have your child cover the paper plate with the tissue paper squares.
* Once completely covered, draw some black glue dots on top of the tissue paper to make the “sunflower seeds” in the craft. Btw – if you don’t have black glue, black craft paint dots would work too!
* To finish off the Paper Plate Sunflower craft, let everything dry completely before displaying proudly.
Super easy, right? And of course – if you don’t have yellow tissue paper or the black glitter glue – you can easily substitute things out for what you have on hand. I’ve seen people do pepper corns/black pepper in place of the sunflower seeds. Just remember to have fun with it!
