Have you ever tried your hand at a craft project like this sweet pig pen craft? Let your imagination be your guide for this fun and easy DIY project that even the littlest of hands can make!
Paper Pig Inside Wood Pig Pen
Hi my dear readers! Today our latest and greatest pig pen kid craft tutorial doubles as a great invitation to play idea AND rainy day activity!
Kids can create their own wooden pig pen wit handprint piggie and then play with it afterwards for some pretend-play farm themed fun. It’s basically a two-fold idea! Children get to craft it up AND play with it at the same time!
I originally came up with the farm themed craft tutorial when I stumbled upon some basic 99 cent wooden crates at my local Michael’s store. They were in the aisle with all the unfinished wood products but I have also seen them towards the front of the store, in the dollar bins, as well.
To complete this pig pen craft, you will of course need the small unfinished wooden crate, some craft paint, brown crinkle paper and a little imagination to turn a simple pink handprint cutout into a little piggie friend. Kids will love painting their crate however they like and when it’s dry, they can take their paper pig creation & slide it right inside the crate, to tie it all together.
So what are you waiting for?! Don’t delay the fun! I’ve laid the basic details out for you below. I really do hope we inspire you to recreate this little piggie craft with your child today and have some great imaginative play together afterwards.
Remember – you can also make this idea your own by swapping out the handprint pig cutout for a small stuffed piggie instead. On that note, don’t you think this idea would be a great gift favor at a birthday party? Especially if you have a farm theme for it?! Just give every kid a wooden crate to paint, along with their new pig friend stuffie to take home.
The choice is yours, I hope you run with it! Happy crafting, my dear friends! Please don’t forget to share pictures with us on our Facebook page of your child’s wooden pig pen creation! #gluedtomycrafts

Directions:
- First things first – place the wooden crate on the paper plate.
- Have children paint the crate however they like. We did a basic brown for ours but the color choices are endless!
- When done painting, set it aside to let it dry completely.
- Now we are going to work on the handprint pig.
- Grab the white cardstock, pink craft paint and paint brush.
- Pick a hand and paint your child’s hand completely pink & press it somewhere on the white cardstock.
- Lift up hand to reveal the handprint design.
- Remove excess paint from their hand with a baby wipe and a quick trip to the sink.
- Set aside the painted handprint paper piece, to let it dry completely.
- When ready, trim around the handprint to create the body of the pig.
- Grab the pink colored cardstock.
- Cut out a simple head with pointy ears for the pig.
- Decorate the head piece with wiggle eyes and your Sharpie marker.
- Set aside.
- Grab the black cardstock.
- Cut out FOUR small black hooves {one for each finger} for the piggie.
- Glue all the paper pieces in place on the painted handprint cutout.
- Now you are ready to assemble the pig pen.
- Grab your brown crinkle paper and put a handful inside the wooden crate. This will be the “mud” of the craft.
- Grab the handprint piggie and place it inside the wood pig pen crate. You might have to bend it a little to make it fit.
- And that’s it! Then play with it and/or display it proudly for all to see. Remember – you can also gift it to someone special, as well!
