Children of all ages can easily join in, practicing their fine motor skills while letting their imaginations bloom!
This craft strives to capture that perfect balance between an easy-to-make project while still encouraging ample amounts of imaginations in order to customize their unique flower masterpiece.
Best of all, it’s fun for everyone involved – no matter age or experience level. Let’s grab the supplies and get started!
Craft Supplies:
Gather these simple supplies before you begin:
- Small Paper Plate – 1 per craft
- Yellow Tissue Paper
- Green Cardstock Paper
- Choice of Color Cardstock Paper {for the petals}
- School Glue
- Craft Scissors
- Stapler
- Pencil or Pen
Directions:
- First cut your yellow tissue paper into small squares.
- Take your paper plate and put a good amount of glue all over it.
- Have children place the tissue paper on top of the glue, until the paper plate is completely covered.
- When they are done with that, set it aside to let it dry completely while you trace/trim out the handprints from the orange cardstock paper, which will become the petals of the flower. Depending on the size of your child’s hands – you may need to do 6-10 handprints.
- Be sure to also cut out the flower’s stem from the green cardstock paper.
- To finish off the flower petal craft – simply staple the handprint cutouts around the tissue paper covered paper plate, as well as stapling on the stem on the bottom.
- Then display proudly!
Tips for Customization and Variations:
You can easily adapt this project to make each flower completely unique:
- Make a Family Bouquet: Trace the hands of everyone in the family using different colors of paper. Layer the larger handprints in the back and the smaller ones in the front for a multi-dimensional, textured flower.
- Add Real Seeds: For a fun sensory element, spread a layer of glue in the center of the paper plate and press real sunflower seeds or dried beans into it.
- Include a Sweet Message: Write a special note or the child’s name and age on the center of the plate or along the green stem. This transforms the craft into a perfect keepsake for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Teacher Appreciation Week.
- Mix Up the Patterns: Let kids use finger paints or dot markers to decorate the paper handprints before you cut them out.
