Cozy Hibernating Bear w/Paper Quilt Craft Idea For Kids

There’s something universally comforting about being tucked into a warm bed with a cozy quilt. This craft captures that feeling perfectly by letting kids create their very own sleeping bear, complete with a colorful paper quilt. It’s a wonderful winter activity for a quiet afternoon, blending creativity with learning in a fun, hands-on project.

This craft is more than just cutting and gluing. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to explore patterns, practice color coordination, and develop their fine motor skills. Designing the paper quilt allows for endless creative expression, making each bear unique.  So on that note, let’s gather our supplies and get ready to craft a sweet, snoozing friend!

Craft Supplies:

Gathering your supplies is half the fun! Here’s everything you’ll need to create your sleeping hedgehog:

  • Sleeping Bear Printable – from box.com
  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Crayons, Markers or Coloring Pencils
  • Two Different Colors of Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • School Glue
  • Embellishments

Directions:

  • Start by printing out our free bear template. You only need one printout per bear craft.
  • Now for the fun part! Grab your crayons, markers, or coloring pencils and give your bear some personality. You can make it a realistic brown bear, a cool polar bear, or even a rainbow-colored bear – it’s completely up to you!
  • Next, let’s get the pieces for our cozy quilt ready. Choose at least two different colors of construction paper. Carefully cut the paper into small squares, about one inch by one inch. These will become the patches for your quilt.
  • Arrange your paper squares onto your colored in bear design, to create a unique patchwork design. You can make stripes, a checkerboard pattern, or a beautiful mosaic of colors. Once you’re happy with your layout, use some school glue to secure each square in place.
  • With your quilt assembled, feel free to add some extra sparkle! You can use glitter, stickers, or draw little stitches on the squares to make your creation even more special.
  • Give your masterpiece a little time to dry completely. Once it’s ready, find the perfect spot to display your beautiful bear and its cozy, custom-made quilt.
