Valentine’s Day Mermaid Tails
Conversation hearts are starting to hit the store shelves everywhere. You can pretty much find them anywhere, even the Dollar Store these days for a mere small price of a dollar.
Although I’m personally not a huge fan of the bagged sweet treat {it’s in my opinion, the candy corn of Valentine’s Day – yuck!} BUT I do have to say, I was recently inspired to take my “hate” of the candy and make a fun kid craft with them, instead!!!
So on that note, inspired by the “shape” of the candy, today I present to YOU our Conversation Heart Mermaid Tails kid craft idea! It’s a first-seen-here craft and I hope you see my vision in it as well!
The sweetheart candy was the perfect shape for “scales” on the mermaid’s tail and boy did this crafty idea turn out super sweet after I played around with various ideas.
So what are you waiting for?! Check out the full tutorial below and get ready to take those powdered heart candies & make them into the unexpected!!

Directions:
- First glue your popsicle sticks together to look like a fence {3 jumbo next to each other with two mini across}
- Set aside to let it dry completely. Repeat for each mermaid tail you want to make this Valentine’s Day.
- Next up – squirt some green craft paint on the paper plate.
- Grab the paint brush and paint the popsicle stick shape completely green.
- Now you are ready for the scales! Simply have children glue conversation hearts ALL over their newly painted popsicle stick shape. They can make a pattern with the colors of hearts or just go at random. The choice is theirs!
- While they are working on that, grab the cardstock paper and the scissors.
- Cut out two petal shaped “mermaid tails” for the bottom of the piece.
- Use the black marker to draw on “scales” and give each one dimension.
- To finish off your Conversation Heart Mermaid Tails – have children glue on their cardstock pieces, as well as any other embellishments to the popsicle stick shape.
- Then let it all sit aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly!!!
