Snow on the ground, mittens by the door, and a flash of bright red at the bird feeder. Few things say “winter” quite like a cardinal. These cheerful birds stay with us all season long, adding a pop of color to even the grayest January day. That makes them the perfect inspiration for a cozy indoor craft!
This paper plate paint splat cardinal craft is simple, a little messy in the best way, and full of personality. Kids get to splat paint, sprinkle glitter, trace their own handprints, and build a fluffy-crested bird that’s all theirs. It works beautifully for preschoolers, kindergartners, and early elementary kids, and it fits right into a winter classroom unit, a snow day at home, or a holiday craft table.
Best of all, the handprint wings turn this cardinal into a sweet keepsake. Years from now, you’ll look at those tiny fingers and smile.
Craft Supplies:
Gather these supplies before you start so little hands can jump right in:
- 1 white paper plate
- Red paint (washable tempera or acrylic works great)
- Red craft glitter
- Red construction paper
- Yellow construction paper
- Black construction paper
- 2 large googly eyes
- Red craft feathers
- Craft glue or a glue gun (glue gun for adult use only)
- Scissors
- A pencil (for tracing)
- Newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect your work surface
Directions:
Step 1: “Splat” and Sparkle the Plate
Cover your table first. Trust us on this one!
Fold your paper plate in half, then open it back up flat. Now for the most exciting part – squirt a generous blob of red craft paint onto one half of the plate. Don’t be shy with it! Fold the plate back in half and press down firmly, squishing the paint all around inside. Give it a good squeeze, then slowly open it back up to reveal a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind splat design. That brilliant burst of red is your cardinal’s body, and no two will ever look the same!
While the paint is still wet, let your child sprinkle red glitter over the top. A light sprinkle gives a frosty, wintry shimmer without overwhelming the bird.
Set the plate aside to dry completely. Thick paint can take an hour or more, so this is a great time to work on the other pieces.
Step 2: Trace and Cut the Handprint Wings
Fold a sheet of red construction paper in half. Have your child place one hand flat on the paper with fingers slightly spread. Trace around the hand with a pencil.
Cut along the traced line while the paper is still folded. You’ll end up with two matching handprints in one go! Older kids can try the cutting themselves, while younger children may need a grown-up to handle the trickier parts between the fingers.
These handprints become your cardinal’s wings, so set them somewhere safe.
Step 3: Cut a Yellow Triangle Beak
Draw a small triangle on the yellow construction paper. Aim for something about the size of your child’s thumb. Cut it out.
Step 4: Give Your Cardinal Big, Bright Eyes
Glue each googly eye onto the center of a black paper circle. The black backing makes the eyes pop against the red paint and gives your bird a bold, friendly face.
Once the plate is fully dry, glue the two eye pieces side by side on the upper half of the red painted circle.
Step 5: Add the Beak
Glue the yellow triangle just below and between the eyes, with the point facing down. Suddenly, your plate has a face, and the cardinal starts coming to life!
Step 6: Attach the Feather Crest
Every cardinal needs its signature pointy crest. Take the two red craft feathers and attach them to the top rim of the paper plate so they stick straight up.
Craft glue works, but feathers can be slippery. An adult may want to use a glue gun here for a stronger hold. If you’re using craft glue, hold the feathers in place for a minute or tape them to the back of the plate for extra security.
Step 7: Assemble the Wings
Flip the plate over. Glue one handprint wing to each side of the plate so the fingers point outward, like your bird is spreading its wings mid-flight. Press firmly and let everything dry.
Turn your cardinal back over, and ta-da! Your splat-tastic winter bird is ready to show off.
