Craft Stick & Yarn Mermaid Hair
Today’s Popsicle Stick and Yarn Mermaid Hair craft idea is absolutely PERFECT for a lazy summer day activity. In fact – if you love o and/or the ocean, this unique art project idea from us is for YOU!
Popsicle sticks and craft yarn are fairly easy to find and fairly inexpensive. Not to mention, you won’t believe ALL the fun colors you can find craft yarn in these days {like rainbow tye dye!}
Anyways…. after playing around the other night in my own yarn stash, I came across some dull colored red yarn that instantly reminded of the Little Mermaid. One thing lead to another and here we are today! With just the yarn in my hand, I instantly pictured beautiful mermaid hair, with some seashells for her hair bow, on the side to really tie it together.
If this is something you would like to recreate with your little mermaid crafter, all it takes is some gluing of THREE jumbo popsicle sticks and a little bit of tying for the hair. It’s super easy!
Best part? All ages of children {and even adults} can customize them however they like, with supplies you probably already have on hand {score!} I might have used red for my mermaid’s hair but the possibilities are really endless!
So without further ado – inspire young creative minds and encourage some fun family time with our small-scale mermaid project today! You can find all the details you need to know for this craft stick mermaid hair tutorial below! Happy crafting, my friends!

This fun yarn mermaid hair craft is perfect for kids of all ages! It’s easy to make and the results are adorable.
Craft Supplies:
- Jumbo Popsicle Sticks {3 per mermaid tail craft}
- School Glue
- Craft Yarn
- Basic Craft Scissors
- Foam Seashell Stickers
- optional materials – glitter, rhinestones etc.
Directions:
- First things first – glue THREE jumbo popsicle sticks together in a simple triangle formation. You will want ONE assembled popsicle stick shape PER mermaid hair craft.
- Set aside to let it dry completely.
- While that is drying, grab your craft yarn and scissors.
- Cut SEVERAL long strips of yarn {about 10 inches long each} that will be the “hair” of the mermaid craft. I would say 20-30 long pieces is a good amount but you might need more.
- Next go ahead and TIE ALL the pieces of craft yarn strands to ONE side of your popsicle stick triangle shape, in a line. You want them to be facing inside the popsicle stick shape {like hair on a face.} Repeat/add as much yarn as you like, until you have the look you like.
- If need be – trim down the secured down yarn with your scissors.
- Finally – when the yarn is in place, grab your seashell stickers and glue them on ONE side of the yarn hair. This way it looks like a bow or flowers in her hair.
- Now the next step is completely optional. If you choose to, you CAN add a skin-tone cardstock piece in the center of your popsicle stick shape {similar to our Popsicle Stick Wizard Hat craft tutorial} and use markers to draw in her face. But if you choose not to do that step {and leave it blank like ours in the example pictures} you are now ready to display it proudly for ALL to see!
