Winter brings opportunities for creative indoor activities, and few crafts capture the season’s charm like adorable popsicle stick penguins wearing colorful sweaters. This delightful project combines the simplicity of wooden stick crafts with the whimsy of Antarctic birds bundled up for cold weather.

These charming penguins make perfect winter decorations, thoughtful gifts, or engaging classroom activities. This craft teaches children about arctic animals while developing fine motor skills and creativity.

Unlike complex winter projects, this penguin craft uses everyday materials and simple techniques that produce impressive results. Keep scrolling to learn how to recreate them today!

Craft Supplies:

Before starting your penguin craft adventure, gather these supplies:

  • Jumbo Popsicle Sticks – 3 per craft
  • Mini Popsicle Sticks – 2 per craft
  • Low Temp Glue Gun
  • Black Paint Crayon
  • Craft Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Orange Cardstock Paper
  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Choice of Color Cardstock Paper
  • Large Wiggle Eyes

Directions:

  • First get the glue gun hot and ready.
  • Assemble the base of your penguin friend by gluing THREE jumbo popsicle sticks and TWO mini popsicle sticks together to look like a fence door {3 next to each other and the mini popsicle sticks across to secure in place.}
  • Allow it to dry completely.
  • Repeat the above steps for each penguin friend you want to make today.
  • Now you are ready for paint! Grab your black tempera paint crayon {or craft paint w/brush} and paint the newly made popsicle stick shape, completely black.
  • Set it aside again, to allow it to dry completely.
  • Now grab all your cardstock paper and scissors.
  • Out of the orange cardstock, cut out a triangle nose and two heart shaped feet for the penguin.
  • Out of the white cardstock, cut out his belly, as well as a “fur” piece for the bottom of his hat.
  • Out of your choice of colored cardstock, cut out his half circle hat shape.
  • Set aside all your paper pieces till the last step, EXCEPT for his belly paper piece.
  • Go ahead and hot glue the belly piece cutout to the center of the painted popsicle stick shape.
  • Now grab your craft yarn, the glue gun and your craft scissors.
  • Take one end of your yarn and hot glue it to the back of your popsicle stick penguin body shape.
  • Start wrapping the yarn SEVERAL times around the popsicle stick base, until you have the look you like. I highly encourage that you leave some of the white belly exposed, so it really looks like a penguin.
  • When ready, cut the yarn and use the hot glue gun again, to secure the loose end to the back of the popsicle stick base.
  • Now go ahead and glue ALL the remaining paper pieces to the yarn wrapped popsicle stick shape from earlier.
  • Don’t forget to hot glue some wiggle eyes on so he can see.
  • Add any other embellishments you see fit.
  • Then let it dry completely before displaying proudly!!!
  • Don’t forget to snap a few pictures of your finished popsicle stick penguins in sweaters creations to share with us! #gluedtomycrafts

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
