Air Dry Clay Unicorn Magnets
Fair warning – long, detailed {maybe boring} story ahead! Sorry not sorry.
Ok. Recently I challenged myself to step outside of the traditional and buy some craft supplies at Target.
I know, I know… that’s not exactly a “challenge” per say but our closest Target isn’t a super Target and the craft/party aisle is actually getting smaller and smaller as the months go by {sad face!} I actually find more craft supplies at my local Walmart store and it’s not even a super store…. it’s getting pretty depressing what the stores offer here in the South Tampa area. But that’s a whole other story for another day!
Anyways, recently I decided to play a little game of “chopped” but in my own crafty way. Just a fun craft challenge for myself. That morning, I decided to venture out and pick THREE random materials, that didn’t exactly go together but could make something pretty awesome. I mean, hello – this craft has birthday candles in it and they aren’t on top of a cake!!
So long story short, my challenge led me to Target and as I was roaming the aisles, pushing that lovely red cart in front of me, I kept thinking about unicorns. Not exactly sure why {maybe because the trip was glorious and magical} but it kept coming in my head so I ran with it. So I went to the stationery/craft aisle, where I saw some Crayola air-dry clay. It stuck out to me, mainly because it’s white {white for unicorn.}
Then I roamed some more in that same area, trying to think of the “horn” of my unicorns. Nothing really screamed “look at me” but as soon as I saw the gold/silver birthday candles in the party section, I ran with it. Completely untraditional some might say for craft time BUT I had a feeling it would work.
The last item was glitter glue pens because GLITTER is clearly needed for anything unicorn related.
So… if you read all of that, thanks for sticking it out! 🙂 That is just a little back-story of how I was inspired to make these clay unicorn and birthday candle magnets. Surprisingly it didn’t turn into a craft “fail” and they are now on our fridge. YAY!

These easy and adorable clay unicorn magnets are perfect for a fun craft project with your kids!
CRAFT SUPPLIES:
- White Crayola Air Dry Clay
- Birthday Candles
- Kitchen Knife
- Black Craft Paint
- Small Tip Paint Brush
- Cookie Sheet/Plate for Drying
- Small Flower Paper Punch
- Cardstock Paper
- Scissors
- Glitter Glue Pens
- Hot Glue Gun
- Magnets – one per unicorn magnet
DIRECTIONS:
- First things first – have a good working area and a game plan to place your clay on for drying {I used a plastic plate but a cookie sheet is great too!} Make sure that plate/cookie sheet is right there for you to place your unicorn pieces on.
- Now take a small chunk of air dry clay in your hands and roll it into a ball. Then flatten it to make a circle shape/head for your unicorn. Set it aside on your drying piece. Repeat for each piece you want to make.
- Next grab a candle and your knife. Carefully cut your candle down in size for the unicorn horn. Be sure to also remove the “wick tip” as well. Repeat for each unicorn piece.
- Now take your newly cut candle piece and carefully press it into the clay circle you just made, right where you think the hair line of the unicorn will start. You will want the clay to “hold” the candle in place when it dries, so try to pinch a little bit of clay around it as well {if for some reason when it dries, it doesn’t hold – that’s ok! Just hot glue it back in place!}
- Next up – the black craft paint and paint brush. Paint on TWO eyelashes and nostrils on your clay circle piece.
- Get that glue gun hot and ready. Glue the paper punched flowers onto the front of the clay piece to make the unicorn’s beautiful hair. Add as much as you like!
- Grab your remaining cardstock and scissors. Cut out TWO ears for each unicorn. Hot glue those to the back of the clay piece.
- Add glitter glue to the center of your flowers.
- When you ready and done with the embellishments, place your cookie sheet/plate in an undisturbed area to let it air-dry for 48 or more hours.
- Finally – when they are completely dry – hot glue magnets to the back of each piece.
- Then display your clay unicorn magnets proudly!!!
