Summer is in full swing and that means getting creative with activities outside. Even though I’m not much of an outdoor person, I was somehow blessed with a son who is the complete opposite. Lil man would stay outside ALL day, everyday if he could. I have even found him outside in our backyard with his fav blanket laid out & all his stuff animals lined up on it. He sure makes himself comfy out there.
Me on the other hand, I’m seriously having a hard time getting the motivation to get out there, nonetheless stay out there. Our patio umbrella just so happen to break last week, so the backyard lacks shade. So I’m trying to coax myself with crafty things & get our interests peaked.
Last year this time-frame, I shared on my Facebook business page how lil man & I made liquid sidewalk chalk paint for our toddler craft of the week. It was at the time that Pinterest was really blowing up with the craft idea. I could have SWORN I shared it here on the blog, but after a quick search of my blog – nothing came up. Oh well. How we did it this past weekend was way better anyways & included a twist. Toothbrushes! Yup. A simple item that I turned into a paint brush. It was a fun change up & lil man really liked it. Toothbrushes can be purchased at Dollar Tree {hello cheap} OR whenever you visit the Dentist & get those cheap toothbrushes, put them aside for this craft. Hello – free is always great too!
So here is what you need to make your liquid chalk:
* Corn starch
* Food coloring dye – in various colors
* Water
* Muffin tin/measuring cup
* Toothbrushes
And of course a great concrete spot, old clothes & creativity.
The recipe is very simple. You basically mix 1 part corn starch to 1 equal part water in a large measuring cup – This makes it easier to pour later. The chalk mixture will be somewhat thick because of the corn starch, but just keep mixing until the mixture gets runny. A small whisk is great to mix the mixture and get rid of the thick clumps.
Next pour the chalk mixture into your muffin tin. Add the food coloring to get the colors you desire. If you don’t have food coloring, just leave the mixture the way it is. It’s a fun, bright white that really pops on the concrete too.
Once you got the colors you want, hand it over to your child. They will know what to do!
Once the liquid chalk paint starts to dry, it makes really bright, vibrant colors on the concrete. And once you are done painting, just let it sit & wait for a rainy day to come or hose it off with the garden hose. The liquid chalk will wash away with ease and not leave any staining.
I also noticed when my son got some on him, about 30 minutes later it just faded away. It didn’t stain his skin but I would HIGHLY recommend wearing play clothes while painting with the liquid chalk paint just in case!
And adults, don’t forget to join in on the painting fun too! Let that inner artist out!!
Hope this inspired you XOXO
