This toilet paper roll stamped winter day craft turns an empty cardboard tube into a snowy, swirly winter sky. All it takes is a little white paint, some dark blue paper, and a sprinkle of sparkle. In about 20 minutes, your little ones will have a blustery winter scene they made with their own hands.
We love this one because it’s simple, inexpensive, and uses something you’d usually toss in the recycling bin. It works beautifully at the kitchen table, in a preschool classroom, or as a library story time extension. The stamping is easy enough for toddlers, and older kids can get creative with layering and decorations.
Craft Supplies:
- Dark blue cardstock (or heavy construction paper)
- Toilet paper roll (one per child works great)
- White acrylic paint (any brand)
- Paper plate or shallow dish for the paint
- Foam snowflake stickers in a mix of sizes
- Iridescent glitter, confetti, or snowflake sequins
- Glue stick or white school glue for the sparkly bits
Tip: Cover your table with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth before you start. Cleanup will take seconds.
Directions:
Step 1: Set up your paint station
Squeeze a small puddle of white paint onto a paper plate. Spread it out with the end of the toilet paper roll so you have a thin, even layer.
Step 2: Dip the tube
Hold the toilet paper roll upright and press one end straight down into the paint. Lift it up and check that the whole rim is coated.
Step 3: Stamp your first circle
Press the painted end onto the dark blue cardstock. Hold it for a second, then lift straight up. Ta-da! Your first snowy ring.
Step 4: Keep stamping all over the page
Stamp circles everywhere: big clusters, scattered rings, and overlapping loops. Overlapping circles create that windy, swirling snowstorm look. Re-dip whenever the rings start to fade.
Step 5: Let it dry
Set the paper aside for 10 to 15 minutes until the paint feels dry to the touch. This is a great time to read one of the winter books below.
Step 6: Add your snowflakes
Peel and stick foam snowflakes across the page. Mix big and small sizes for a fun, layered look.
Step 7: Add some sparkle
Dab a few small spots of glue onto the paper. Sprinkle iridescent glitter, confetti, or snowflake sequins on top, then gently tap off the extra. A little cluster in the middle looks extra magical. Your winter day is now complete!
Book Pairings for a Cozy Winter Story Time:
Pairing a craft with a picture book turns a fun activity into a meaningful learning moment. Here are three favorites that go perfectly with this project.
Dream Snow by Eric Carle
This gentle, dreamy story is filled with Eric Carle’s signature collage art and plenty of falling snow. Its deep blue pages and white snowflakes look a lot like the finished craft, making it a perfect match. After reading, invite kids to make their own “dream snow” sky.
There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow!
This silly, rhyming story always gets giggles. Kids love guessing what the Cold Lady will swallow next. It’s a great pick before adding snowmen or other winter extras to your artwork.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Winter
Little readers will love joining the caterpillar on a snowy winter adventure. Pair it with the caterpillar variation below for a sweet book-to-craft connection.
