Some of the best Christmas crafts come from things you already have lying around. This one starts with a humble pool noodle, the same foam tube that floated around the pool all summer. With one quick slice, it becomes a stamp that makes perfect little reindeer faces.
This pool noodle stamped reindeer craft is simple, cheap, and very cute. Kids love pressing the stamp into paint and watching a whole herd show up on the page. Every reindeer gets a shiny red nose, wiggly googly eyes, and silly hand-drawn antlers. No two ever look the same, and that’s half the fun.
It works well at the kitchen table, in a preschool classroom, or as a cozy activity during winter break. Let’s get stamping!
Craft Supplies:
Gather these supplies before you start so the fun keeps moving:
- Pool noodle slice: About 1 inch thick. This is your reindeer stamp.
- Brown paint: Washable tempera or acrylic craft paint both work well.
- Paper plate: This holds the paint for dipping.
- Construction paper: Blue or brown look especially festive.
- Red circle stickers or red paper cutouts: These become the shiny noses.
- Googly eyes: Small or medium sizes fit best.
- Black Sharpie marker: For drawing the antlers.
- Glue: A glue stick or white school glue for the eyes and paper noses.
Helpful extras: A smock or old T-shirt, baby wipes for quick cleanups, and a tablecloth or newspaper to protect your table.
Directions:
Step 1: Prep Your Pool Noodle Stamp
An adult should handle this part. Use a serrated knife to slice a pool noodle into rounds about 1 inch thick. The hollow center is the secret here. It leaves a little open ring in the middle of each stamp, which makes the perfect spot for the reindeer’s nose.
Cut a few extra slices if you’re crafting with a group. That way, everyone gets their own stamp and nobody has to wait.
Step 2: Pour the Paint
Squeeze a small puddle of brown paint onto the paper plate. Spread it out a bit so it’s wider than your pool noodle slice. A thin, even layer gives you the cleanest stamps. Too much paint can get blobby and fill in the center hole.
Step 3: Dip the Pool Noodle Slice
Have your child press one flat side of the pool noodle slice into the paint. A gentle tap or two is plenty to coat the foam. Lift it straight up and check that the whole ring has paint on it.
Step 4: Stamp the Reindeer Heads
Now for the best part! Press the painted slice firmly onto the construction paper. Hold it for a second, then lift it straight up. Ta-da! You’ve got your first reindeer head.
Keep going until the page is full of reindeer. Dip again before each stamp so every head comes out bold. Leave a little space between each one so there’s room for antlers later.
Don’t worry if some stamps look patchy or uneven. That foamy texture actually looks a lot like soft reindeer fur.
Step 5: Let It Dry
Set the paper aside and let the paint dry completely. Washable paint usually dries in about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how thick it went on. This is a great time to read a holiday story, wash up, or have a snack.
Step 6: Add the Red Nose
Once the paint is dry, place a red circle sticker right in the open center of each reindeer head. If you’re using red paper cutouts instead, add a dab of glue on the back first.
Peeling stickers is wonderful fine motor practice for little ones. Give them time, and celebrate each nose they get on their own.
Step 7: Glue on the Googly Eyes
Add two small dots of glue just above each red nose. Then press a googly eye onto each dot. Suddenly, your reindeer have personality! Some might look surprised, some sleepy, and some totally goofy.
Safety note: Googly eyes are small and can be a choking hazard. Keep a close eye on toddlers during this step, or swap in drawn-on eyes for very young kids.
Step 8: Draw the Antlers
Grab the black Sharpie and draw antlers sprouting from the top of each reindeer head. Simple branching lines work great. Kids can make them tall, short, curly, or zigzag.
Younger kids may need a hand with this step, or you can draw dotted lines for them to trace. Older kids often love making each reindeer’s antlers totally different.
Let the glue dry, and your reindeer herd is ready to show off!
