Winter brings bare trees, frosty mornings, and one of our favorite feathered friends: the bright red cardinal. Against a snowy backdrop, these cheerful birds look like little sparks of color, and kids love spotting them.
That’s what inspired this sweet and simple craft. With a few dot stickers, some markers, and a dab of white paint, your little ones can create their own snowy branch full of cardinals.
This project is perfect for preschoolers and early elementary kids. It’s low-mess, uses supplies you probably already have, and comes together in about 20 minutes. It works just as well at the kitchen table as it does in the classroom, so let’s get crafting!

Craft Supplies:
- Light blue construction paper
- Red circular dot stickers
- Brown marker
- Black fine-tip marker
- White paint
- Cotton swabs (Q-tips)
- Cupcake liner (to hold the paint)
Helpful tip: A paper cupcake liner makes a perfect mini paint cup. It holds just the right amount of paint, and you can toss it when you’re done. Cleanup is a breeze!
Directions:
Step 1: Draw the Bare Tree Branches
Lay your light blue construction paper flat. This will be your winter sky. Using the brown marker, draw a few long branches stretching across the page. Then add smaller branches that split off from the main ones, like tiny twigs reaching out.
There’s no wrong way to do this! Some branches can go straight across, while others can angle up or down. Encourage your kids to fill the page so their cardinals have plenty of spots to perch.
Step 2: Add Your Red Dot Cardinals
Now for the fun part! Peel the red dot stickers off the sheet and press them onto the branches. Each red dot becomes a cardinal.
Kids can place their birds close together like a little flock, or spread them out across the tree. Try setting a few right on top of the branches so they look like they’re sitting there.
Step 3: Draw the Cardinal Details
Grab the black fine-tip marker and bring each bird to life. On every red dot, draw:
- A beak: A small triangle pointing out to one side
- An eye: A tiny dot near the beak
- Feet: Two little lines reaching down to the branch
- Crest feathers: A few short lines on top of the head for that classic cardinal tuft
Kids love giving each bird its own personality. Point the beaks in different directions so some birds look left and others look right. It makes the whole scene feel lively and full of chatter!
Step 4: Dab On the Snow
Pour a small amount of white paint into your cupcake liner. Dip the tip of a cotton swab into the paint and gently dab it along the tops of the branches. Keep going until the branches look freshly dusted with snow.
You can also add a few dots in the open sky to create falling snowflakes. Let the paint dry completely before you hang up or display the artwork.
Helpful tip: Remind kids to “tap, tap, tap” instead of swiping. Tapping creates those fluffy, round snow dots that look so pretty against the branches.
Fun Ways to Switch It Up:
Once your kids get the hang of it, try these easy twists:
- Add a little friend: Use blue dot stickers for blue jays or yellow ones for goldfinches.
- Make it a counting activity: Roll a die and add that many cardinals to the tree.
- Turn it into a card: Fold the paper in half before starting and send it as a winter greeting.
- Try a night scene: Use dark blue paper and add a moon for a cozy evening look.
