Some crafts are pretty. Some crafts are messy. And then there are the truly magical ones that manage to be both at once. This paint splat volcano craft falls firmly into that last category, and it’s about to become a favorite at your kitchen table.
The idea is simple: kids squeeze bright paint onto a single sheet of cardstock paper, smoosh it flat, and watch a fiery “lava” splat appear before their eyes. Add a volcano cutout, a sprinkle of gold glitter, and a few heart stickers, and you’ve got an eruption of color that doubles as the cutest handmade card around. The pun writes itself – “I ‘LAVA’ you more than words can say!”
Whether you’re a parent looking for a rainy-day activity, a teacher planning a classroom project, or a caregiver hunting for something hands-on, this one delivers big smiles for very little fuss. Let’s dig in!
Craft Supplies:
Gather your supplies before you start. Having everything within reach keeps the energy flowing and the mess contained.
- Light Blue Cardstock Paper
- White Cardstock Paper
- Crayons, Markers or Coloring Pencil
- Volcano Printable – on box.com – password is GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS2026
- Red, Yellow and Orange Tulip Puffy Paint
- Loose Craft Glitter
- School Glue
- Small Heart Stickers
Directions:
- First things first – take your light blue cardstock and fold it in half. Open it back up.
- Now for the fun part. Have your child squeeze blobs of red, orange and yellow paint right onto one side of the paper.
- Fold the card gently in half so the painted side touches itself. Then press down and smoosh with flat palms. Run little hands across the folded card, pressing and sliding to spread the paint. When you open it back up, you’ll find a stunning, symmetrical lava splat in fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. This is always the “wow” moment, so build it up. Count to three before the big reveal.
- Go ahead and now sprinkle a pinch of gold glitter over the center of the “wet” splat. The glitter sticks to the damp paint and catches the light like glowing embers. A little goes a long way here. Tip the card gently to shake off any extra, then let it dry for a few minutes.
- While you wait for the paint to dry, go ahead and color/cut out the volcano elements from your printable.
- Once the paint feels dry to the touch, it’s time to decorate. Dab small dots of glue on the back of your two cutouts and place them on top of the “splat” design.
- To finish off the craft, add a few heart stickers all over the design to really tie the theme together.
- Now gift and/or display your piece proudly for all to see!
