A children’s book, The Rainbow Fish, sits beside a paper plate fish craft covered in colorful dot stickers with a googly eye and glittery pink fins. An @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS handle is visible at the bottom.

Reading a good book with your kids becomes even more fun when you pair it with a creative activity. Marcus Pfister’s classic children’s book, The Rainbow Fish, tells a beautiful story about sharing and friendship. We can bring this magical underwater world right to your kitchen table with a simple, colorful craft.

This paper plate and dot sticker Rainbow Fish project is perfect for little hands. It uses basic supplies you probably already have at home, and it takes only a few minutes to set up. Let us dive right into making this bright and happy fish.

Craft Supplies:

To get started, gather these basic craft supplies:

  • White paper plate – one per craft
  • Colorful round dot stickers
  • Black marker
  • Cardstock paper
  • One large googly eye
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Liquid glue or a glue stick

Directions:

Step 1: Draw the Face
Take your black marker and draw a curved line down the right side of the paper plate. This line clearly separates the fish’s face from its scaly body.

Step 2: Add the Shimmering Scales
Now comes the best part for the kids. Peel the colorful dot stickers and place them all over the left side of the paper plate. You can layer them slightly so they look like real fish scales. Encourage your kids to mix the colors to create their very own vibrant rainbow pattern.

Step 3: Cut Out the Fins and Mouth
Grab your glitter cardstock and your scissors. Cut out two simple heart shapes. Make one large heart for the tail fin and one much smaller heart for the fish’s lips.

Step 4: Bring the Fish to Life
Use your stapler to attach the large heart to the far left side of the paper plate for the tail. Next, staple the smaller heart to the far right edge to make the mouth. Finally, place a small drop of glue on the back of the googly eye and press it onto the face section.

Step 5: Show it Off!

When done decorating, display your fish proudly for ALL to see!

This simple ocean themed craft does much more than just keep kids busy on a rainy afternoon. Peeling and placing the small dot stickers helps young children build fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It also gives them a great chance to practice naming colors and creating basic patterns.

When you tie a hands-on craft to a beloved storybook, you boost their reading comprehension. It helps kids remember the plot and connect with the characters on a deeper level. Most importantly, they get a beautiful, sparkly piece of art to proudly display on the fridge.

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
