Paper Plate Christmas Fireplace Craft Idea For Kids

Looking for Christmas crafts kids can make? This paper plate fireplace craft is a fun holiday decoration you can make in minutes! Perfect for preschool and kindergarten.

Craft Supplies:

  • Large Paper Plate – 1 per craft
  • Small Paper Plate – 1 per craft
  • Craft Scissors
  • Black Craft Paint
  • Brown Craft Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Light Brown Cardstock Paper
  • Dark Brown Cardstock Paper
  • Red Cardstock Paper
  • Orange Cardstock Paper
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Black Sharpie Marker
  • Hand-Held Office Stapler
  • Gold Glitter Glue
  • Gold Loose Craft Glitter
  • Christmas Stocking Stickers

Directions:

  • First things first – we are going to cut off a SMALL sliver off one side of each paper plate, so our fireplace will sit nicely on the ground.
  • Discard the excess paper plate pieces.
  • Now for the painting step. Go ahead and paint the LARGE paper plate completely BROWN, while painting the SMALL paper plate completely BLACK.
  • When done painting, set them both aside for a bit.
  • Now we are going to work on the handprint flames. Grab your pencil, scissors and orange & red cardstock paper.
  • Trace your child’s hand at least ONCE on each piece of paper and trim out the designs with scissors.
  • Discard excess paper.
  • Out of the remaining TWO shades of brown cardstock paper, you are going to cut out the chimney {which will be a four inch wide long rectangle} and then the mantle {which is a eight inch long and thin rectangle.}
  • On the chimney cutout you just made, go ahead and use your black marker to draw on the bricks.
  • To finish off the paper plate fireplace, you are going to start off by stapling the smaller painted paper plate to the larger one. Just lay them on top of each other and line up where you trim off the smaller amount of paper plate from earlier.
  • Follow that up stapling on the handprint flames inside the smaller paper plate.
  • Next up – staple the chimney paper piece to the back of the combined paper plates, while stapling the mantle to the front.
  • Go ahead and now add some gold glitter glue & loose craft glitter on the handprint cutouts to really make it look like “fire.”
  • The last step is to add a few stocking stickers to pull it all together.
  • Then let it all dry completely before you display it proudly for ALL to see!

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
