Washi Tape Lion Mane – Kid Craft Idea
In today’s latest tutorial, I’m trying to give washi tape a crafty comeback. At least I’m going to try!
Remember how washi tape was ALL the craze among crafters a few years back? I’m guilty as charged and I was one of those on the bandwagon too.
I literally bought ALL the colors, various sizes and every single print imaginable I could find. I never really had a plan back then on how to use this beautiful, easy to tear material but everything that was “cute” in washi tape form came home with me & got added to my growing rainbow collection.
I mean – it’s still a “thing” these days when it comes to those who doodle and make their planners super pretty but I don’t think it’s as popular as some of the materials you see in craft stores right now. It’s kinda like when paper straws were a thing and everyone & their mom was using them in their DIY’s and party celebrations. Now – not so much!
Anyways – long story short, I recently adapted our chalk art lion tutorial and brought it more in line with a craft idea that is a little bit less messy in a sense. Although I personally love all the chalk art ideas I’ve been sharing lately, I know not everyone feels the same {and sadly people have told me that – yuck!} So on that note, I really do hope my crafty washi tape lion mane idea is something you are inspired to recreate with your child today! All the details and the free lion face printable can be found below.
Don’t let this crafty abstract idea slip away. Bookmark it now and later this week {or even NOW!} make some colorful “one-of-a-kind” washi tape manes with the kids & then show off those creations for us to see! We love seeing those pics roll through our Instagram and Facebook feeds!
Happy crafting, my dear friends! I’ll let you get to it! #gluedtomycrafts

- Now that you have the printable, go ahead and color in the lion face with a yellow crayon {or marker.}
- When done coloring in the printable, use the scissors to trim out the lion head.
- Discard the leftover cardstock paper and set aside the paper piece lion head till later.
- Now grab a single sheet of black cardstock and your various colors of washi tape.
- Using one color roll at a time, tear off several “lines” of washi tape and place them on the paper going outward from the center of the paper {see our image for example} to make the lion’s mane. Add as many pieces of washi tape and colors that you like. You want it to be nice and “fluffy” though.

Make It Your Own:
- Instead of washi tape, I challenge YOU to look around in your craft stash and find other bright, colorful art materials to make a lion mane out of. Maybe you have old magazines or newspapers that can be cut up? Maybe wrapping paper, craft yarn or cereal boxes? So many material ideas that can be glued to paper in a circle formation, I just could go on and on! So will you accept the challenge and share pictures with me? I sure hope so!
