Make literacy week extra special with this SIMPLEST One Fish, Two Fish Costume Idea!

It’s inspired by the classic Dr. Seuss book we all know and love!

DIY Fish Shirt Costume For Dr. Seuss Week

The other day, Michaels had their blank t-shirts at their rock bottom price for the summer season. I got several different colors for lil man for $3 each. I just couldn’t resist the sale.

And since I “know” literacy week comes around every year and my son’s school likes to participate with costumes, I decided to get a jump start on HIS right now {I went ahead and bought him a size shirt up for today’s post just in case he grows like a weed before then!}

Being the “crafty” mom that I am – I had to come with something “handmade.” It’s just in my DNA. But sometimes this crafty mom can be “kinda” lazy when it comes to making stuff. I don’t like to spend a long time on ANY of our crafts, let alone, a long of time. I probably have a little ADHD with crafts. The less steps and supplies, the better I feel about it!

So that’s why I’m saying this One Fish Two Fish Costume is the SIMPLEST because it only involves some tracing, cutting and pinning. That’s it! It took “US” maybe twenty minutes from start to finish to complete. Plus since the handprint fish are removable with the safety pins, we can upcycle the yellow shirt for another project OR he can wear it again, just plain. I say that’s a great way to stretch that $3 investment!

Simplest One Fish Two Fish Costume - Dr Seuss CRAFT SUPPLIES:

  • To complete this “one fish, two fish” costume idea, all you need is a basic yellow cotton shirt, red/white/green/blue craft felt, marker for tracing, scissors, hot glue gun, wiggle eyes and safety pins.

DIRECTIONS:

  • As for the steps – first things first. Trace your child’s hands on each color of craft felt. One white, two green, one red and one blue handprint. Just like on the book cover!
  • Trim those out with the scissors.
  • Now get the glue gun hot and ready. Hot glue a wiggle eye to each handprint cutout. Grab the remaining scrap felt and cut out some lips for EACH fish. Hot glue those to the handprints as well.
  • Now for pinning it ALL together. Have children “wear” their yellow shirt as YOU carefully “safety pin” each fish onto the shirt. You can either mimic the book or just put them on at random.
  • And that’s it! Wear proudly for ALL to see!! Maybe even carry the book {affiliate link} along, to really tie it together.
  • Then when you are done and want to reuse the yellow shirt, remove the safety pins and handprint fish 🙂

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
