Groovy Buttons - Pete Character Costume Idea

Groovy Buttons – Handmade Pete Character Costume Idea

Let me tell you a little backstory before I get to my how-to for my Groovy Buttons – Pete Character Costume Idea.

It’s literacy week at my son’s school and today was “Dress As Your Favorite Book Character.”

Being the “crafty” mom that I am – we HAD TO come with up with a DIY idea to show off. Only problem was, this crafty mom was “kinda” cheap and lazy. I really didn’t want to spend a lot of time or money on a costume that would literally be worn for only a few hours {I’m not a big fan of DIY Halloween costumes either – you can punch me if you like!}

So after surfing through Pinterest and polling my Facebook friends, I finally came up with a simple idea for lil man to be “Pete The Cat.” This book character is pretty recognizable from the series by James Dean AND point blank – just groovy!!!

But the story doesn’t end there. It was “suppose” to be effortless on my part BUT this mama decided to go to Target for her craft supplies and that ended in an EPIC #craftfail on my part. Apparently you CAN’T dye a white shirt with yellow FOOD coloring and Walmart really does have everything you need {even though I hate shopping there at times.}

Groovy Buttons Pete Character Costume Idea

So anyways – if you are looking for an crafty and easy DIY cat costume idea {if you go to Walmart in the first place} may I suggest this Groovy Buttons – Pete Inspired costume idea? All you need is a yellow shirt and large colorful buttons to sew down the center. Then add a simple hat made out of cardstock and BAM! Mission accomplished!

Best part? You can easily remove the buttons later on and use the shirt as is {well…least that’s the plan anyways!}

Learn from my mistakes and be inspired to make your own DIY Pete The Cat costume for your child to enjoy during reading week!

Happy crafting my friends!!! I would love to see pictures of your child dressed up as Pete The Cat on the big day. Please come share pictures of them on our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram to see! #gluedtomycrafts

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
