How To Make Scented Rice For Your Sensory Bins
Today I’m going to share with you all a Kool-Aid Dyed Rice DIY tutorial.
This fun, colored rice is great for several different sensory play ideas for young kids. So with that being said – tomorrow I’ll be sharing what I recently did with our new colored rice. But first – let’s talk about how I dyed the rice with Kool-Aid in the first place.
Dying rice with Kool-Aid is pretty amazing {and genius} Although you can easily dye dried rice with rubbing alcohol and plain food dye – you won’t get the amazing smell like you would with Kool-Aid {it definitely masks the rubbing alcohol smell long after} ALSO – the colors are just more vibrant with Kool-Aid and the dye itself won’t stain your hands.
It really is a great alternative and just more fun! Any powdered drink mix will work, but the handy single packs are the best way to go!

Directions:
{You can totally customize this to whatever color & amount you need. I based everything off of 3 cups of dried rice and five different single packs of Kool-Aid. Also take note that the color of the Kool-Aid powder may not reflect the color on the packing. To make sure you get the right color you want – check the cup that the Kool-Aid guy is holding in the picture}
- Measure out 3 cups of rice in 5 different storage bags. {3 cups, each}
- Place 3 teaspoons of rubbing alcohol in each storage bag of rice.
- Empty one packet of Kool-Aid into each bag. Seal off the bag.
- Now shake, shake and shake!!!
- Once the rice is completely covered and colored, lay it out flat on a cookie sheet to dry. {If you don’t want the colors to mix – place each bag on a separate cookie sheet or make dividers w/foil}
- Let the rice dry overnight {or a few hours} before playing with it.
- Once completely dry – the rice may be clumped together. Just separate with your fingers and play as you like.
