Directions:
Creating Kool-Aid dyed rice is simpler than you might think! Here’s a step-by-step guide to making it yourself.
{You can totally customize this to whatever color & amount you need. I based everything off of 3 cups of dried rice and five different single packs of Kool-Aid. Also take note that the color of the Kool-Aid powder may not reflect the color on the packing. To make sure you get the right color you want – check the cup that the Kool-Aid guy is holding in the picture}
- Measure out 3 cups of rice in 5 different storage bags. {3 cups, each}
- Place 3 teaspoons of rubbing alcohol in each storage bag of rice.
- Empty one packet of Kool-Aid into each bag. Seal off the bag.
- Now shake, shake and shake!!!
- Once the rice is completely covered and colored, lay it out flat on a cookie sheet to dry. {If you don’t want the colors to mix – place each bag on a separate cookie sheet or make dividers w/foil}
- Let the rice dry overnight {or a few hours} before playing with it.
- Once completely dry – the rice may be clumped together. Just separate with your fingers and play as you like.
How to Use Kool-Aid Dyed Rice in Sensory Activities:
Now that you have your beautifully dyed rice, what can you do with it? Here are some fun and creative ways to incorporate Kool-Aid dyed rice into sensory bin activities.
Themed Sensory Bins
Create a sensory bin around a specific theme to spark your child’s imagination. Some popular themes include:
- Under the Sea – Use blue rice as “water” and add plastic sea creatures, shells, and pebbles for an ocean vibe.
- Rainbow Exploration – Layer different colored rice like a rainbow and provide scoops and small containers for sorting activities.
- Farm Fun – Use green and brown rice as the “earth” and add miniature farm animals, toy tractors, and fences.
Fine Motor Skill Development
Provide tools like spoons, tweezers, and tongs to encourage fine motor practice. Kids can scoop, sort, and transfer rice into containers or through funnels.
Sensory Exploration
Allow kids to run their hands through the rice, feeling the textures and enjoying the fruity scents. You can even hide small objects (like beads or buttons) in the rice for them to find.
Educational Activities
Enhance learning with activities like:
- Letter- or number-based scavenger hunts (e.g., hide plastic letters/numbers for kids to identify).
- Sorting and counting exercises with small objects and containers.
- Color recognition activities by encouraging kids to separate the rice by shade.
Tips for Success and Safety:
- Store Properly – Keep the dyed rice in an airtight container or Ziplock bag when not in use. It will last for months if stored in a dry, cool place.
- Supervise Playtime – While Kool-Aid dyed rice is non-toxic, it’s not edible. Always supervise children and ensure they don’t put rice in their mouths.
- Experiment Freely – Don’t hesitate to mix and match Kool-Aid flavors to create new colors and scents. Creativity knows no bounds!
