Autumn has a way of pulling everyone toward the craft table – and this paper plate hedgehog is the perfect excuse to answer that call. When the leaves start turning and the air gets a little cooler, this cozy afternoon project delivers big smiles with minimal fuss. It’s simple, low-mess, and the results are downright adorable.

Kids love it because they get to build a cute critter from scratch. You’ll love it because the supplies are cheap, the setup is easy, and cleanup takes about two minutes. Whether you’re a parent filling a rainy Saturday, a teacher planning a seasonal lesson, or a caregiver hunting for a screen-free treat, this one’s a keeper!

Craft Supplies:

  • Gold/brown colored paper plates (one per hedgehog – I find mine at Dollar Tree)
  • Foam leaf stickers in fall colors – think red, orange, yellow, and green
  • Lrage googly eyes (one per hedgehog)
  • Black paper for the nose
  • Glue (a glue stick or craft glue both work)
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. First things first – take your paper plate and cut it straight down the middle so you have two half-circles. Each half becomes the body of one hedgehog, so a single plate makes two critters. The flat edge will be the bottom, and the rounded edge will hold the spines.
  2. Now for the best bit. Peel and stick the foam or felt leaves across the rounded top and center of the plate. Start along the curved edge and work inward, layering the leaves so they overlap slightly.
  3. Pick one narrow end of the half-circle to be the face. Glue a large googly eye near that tip, just above the center. This instantly gives your hedgehog personality. One eye is plenty for this side-profile look, but you can add a second if you prefer.
  4. Cut a small circle from your black paper. If you have a hole punch, use it for a quick, tidy nose. Glue the black circle right at the pointed tip of the face, just below and in front of the eye.
  5. And that’s it – your hedgehog is complete! Let the glue dry for a few minutes, then find a spot to show it off.

So grab those plates and leaf stickers, clear a spot at the table, and let the crafting begin. Your little ones will have a whole prickle of hedgehogs before you know it. Happy crafting, my friends!
