There’s something about the first crisp days of fall that makes kids want to get their hands busy. This paper plate apple core craft is the perfect way to celebrate the season, and it comes with a sweet twist: a “Love you to the core!” message that turns a simple project into a keepsake worth saving.

It’s easy, it’s affordable, and it uses supplies you probably already have in your craft bin. Best of all, kids can personalize every step. Let’s dig in!

Craft Supplies:

Gather these supplies before you start so everything is within reach:

  • 1 red paper plate
  • 1 sheet of large construction paper {we used a shade of pink}
  • White crepe paper
  • Brown tempera paint
  • Small paper plate
  • Brown cardstock (for the stem)
  • Green cardstock (for the leaf)
  • Scissors
  • School glue
  • A stapler
  • A black marker

That’s it! No fancy tools required.

Directions:

  1. Take your red paper plate and cut it in half so you have two pieces. These will become the top and bottom “skin” of your apple. At this point in time you should staple a stem & leaf cutout to one of the paper plate halves. Set them aside for now.
  2. Tear five long white crepe paper strips and glue them down vertically, in the center of your large construction paper. These strips create the look of the apple’s core running through the middle. Let the glue dry for a minute before moving on.
  3. Next take your two paper plate pieces and glue them {one on each end} to the crepe paper covered construction paper to create the apple core design.
  4. Now for the fun part – making the thumbprint hearts! Squirt some craft paint on a small paper plate. Dip your index finger in the paint and then press it onto the white strips. Stamp five hearts down the core to make the seeds.
  5. Once everything is dry, use a black marker to write “Love you” on the top half and “to the core!” on the bottom half. And there you have it – a finished apple core full of love.

A papercraft apple core made from red paper plates, white paper strips, and black dot stickers sits on brown paper, surrounded by glue, a marker, toilet paper, and the handle @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS—perfect for crepe paper craft ideas.

The best part of this project is how flexible it is. Swap the “Love you to the core!” message for “You’re the apple of my eye” or a simple “Happy Fall.” Change the paper plate color, add a handprint cutout for the leaf, or change up how you do the seeds.

However your kids decide to make it, they’ll end up with a bright, cheerful piece of fall they can be proud of. Grab your supplies, clear the table, and enjoy a little crafting time together this season. Happy crafting, my friends!
