Summer is the perfect time for bright, colorful art projects with kids. As the weather warms up, we often look for simple ways to bring the beach right to our kitchen tables.

This paper plate and fingerprint seashell craft offers exactly that. It is a fantastic ocean-themed activity that sparks creativity while keeping young hands busy.

Parents, teachers, and caregivers will love how few supplies it requires, while kids will absolutely enjoy getting their fingers a little messy. Let’s get to crafting it up!

Craft Supplies:

You only need a few basic supplies to bring this craft to life. You likely have most of these items sitting in your craft closet right now.

  • White paper plates
  • Washable craft paint (yellow and orange work beautifully)
  • Scissors
  • Small plastic lids or a spare paper plate (to hold the paint)
  • Baby wipes (for quick and easy cleanup)

Directions:

Step 1: Shape the Seashell
Grab a white paper plate and your scissors. Cut a small triangular notch at the bottom edge of the plate. Next, trim the sides slightly to form a wide, fan-like shape. Keep the natural scalloped rim of the paper plate at the top, as this perfectly mimics the textured edge of a real scallop shell.

Step 2: Prepare the Paint
Squeeze a small amount of yellow and orange washable paint onto another small paper plate. You only need a shallow puddle for little fingers to easily dip into.

Step 3: Add the Fingerprints
Now comes the fun part. Have the kids dip their index finger into the paint puddle. Starting from the bottom notch of the paper plate, they should stamp fingerprints in a straight line all the way up to the top scalloped edge. Repeat this process, creating multiple lines radiating from the base out to the wide rim. This technique creates the beautiful, textured ridges you see on natural seashells.

Step 4: Let it Dry
Set your freshly painted seashell aside on a flat surface to dry completely. Once dry, you can hang these up on the fridge, string them together to make a cute summer banner, or use them as decorations for an ocean-themed learning week.

Gather your supplies and set aside some time this week to create these bright, cheerful seashells. Art projects like this one help children build fine motor skills and give them a wonderful sense of pride in their work.

We hope you enjoy making this simple craft and soaking up all the creative fun this season has to offer. Happy crafting, my friends!

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
