Memorial Day isn’t just the unofficial start to summer; it’s a day of remembrance for those who have paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy.

Amidst the barbecues and picnics, it’s vital to take a moment and reflect on the significance of the day. Crafting with your children can be a beautiful way to introduce them to the importance of Memorial Day, and what could be more fun than getting a little messy with paint?

Craft Supplies:

  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Cross Printable – on our landing page
  • Large Paper Plate
  • Tulip Puffy Paint {in red and blue}
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Embellishments

Directions:

  • First fold your paper plate in half. Straight up the center.
  • Unfold the paper plate and squirt some paint on one side of the plate {I like the Tulip Puffy Paint for this particular step since it’s in a nice controlled squirt bottle} Be sure to keep the paint close to the middle of the plate.
  • Once the paint is down, go ahead and fold/squish your piece of paper plate together again. Be sure to rub your hand all over the folded piece, so the paint will cover your design nicely.
  • Now carefully unfold your piece to reveal your design.
  • If desired, sprinkle loose craft glitter on top of the wet paint.
  • Set aside your piece for a bit.
  • Now grab your printable. Cut out the cross design.
  • To finish the Puffy Paint Memorial Day craft – glue your cardstock cross to the center of the painted piece.
  • And that’s it! Then set aside to let it dry completely before you display it proudly for ALL to see.

After creating your memorial day splat art, take a moment to discuss with your children why we celebrate Memorial Day and the meaning behind the colors we chose. Red can represent courage and valor, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice. These discussions can help children understand and connect with the day on a deeper level.

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
