In today’s fast-paced world, finding simple and engaging activities for children can be a challenge. If you’re looking for a delightful craft that combines creativity, nature, and fun, look no further than making leaf hedgehog puppets.

This easy-to-follow guide will show you how to transform fallen leaves into adorable hedgehog puppets that kids will love.

Handmade leaf hedgehog puppets crafted from colorful autumn leaves and brown paper.

Crafts like today’s leaf hedgehog puppet tutorial also help develop fine motor skills, creativity, and patience. They provide an excellent opportunity for children to practice cutting, gluing, and arranging materials, all while having fun. And the best part? No special supplies are needed—just a few household items and some creativity.

Craft Supplies:

Before you begin, gather your materials. You’ll need:

  • Large Burlap Leaves
  • Large Popsicle Sticks
  • Brown Cardstock Paper
  • Heart Craft Punch
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Wiggle Eye Stickers
  • Black Marker

Directions:

Once you have everything ready, find a comfortable workspace where your child can spread out their materials and get creative.

  • First get the glue gun hot and ready. Set it aside. If working with younger children, adult supervision is REQUIRED!
  • Grab your kraft colored cardstock and paper heart punch.
  • Punch out ONE heart per hedgehog puppet. This will be it’s face.
  • Take the black Sharpie marker and draw on a nose, on the tip of the paper heart.
  • Go ahead and also take a wiggle eye sticker & adhere it in place on the paper heart.
  • Now you are ready to start assembling your leaf hedgehog puppet. Gather all your pieces.
  • Hot glue the leaf to one end of the popsicle stick.
  • Go ahead and add the paper heart face on top of that.
  • Add any other embellishments you see fit and allow it all to dry completely.
  • Then when ready, go ahead and “dance” your finished leaf hedgehog piece around & enjoy the smiles that appear! You can also sit your finished friend in a flower pot for easy displaying!

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
