Read Across America Week offers the perfect opportunity to bring beloved storybook characters to life through hands-on activities. This year, why not celebrate Dr. Seuss’s timeless message with a charming Popsicle Stick Horton craft that combines creativity with literacy learning?

This simple yet engaging craft project transforms ordinary craft supplies into Horton the Elephant, the gentle giant who reminds us that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” Your students or children will love creating their own version of this beloved character while reinforcing the important themes from Dr. Seuss’s classic stories.

Craft Supplies:

Gathering your supplies ahead of time ensures a smooth crafting experience. Here’s what you’ll need for each Horton craft:

  • Jumbo Popsicle Sticks – 3 per craft
  • School Glue
  • Light Blue Cardstock Paper
  • Black Cardstock Paper
  • Blue Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Small Paper Plate
  • Craft Scissors
  • Small Pink Pom Pom
  • Large Wiggle Eyes – 2 per craft

Directions:

  • First grab three popsicle sticks {three per elephant} and glue them together to look like a triangle.
  • Set aside to let it dry completely.
  • While that is drying, grab your light blue cardstock and cut a triangular shape that will be placed within the popsicle stick design and be the face of Horton.
  • At this time, you should also cut out two ears, an elephant trunk and hair out of the remaining cardstock.
  • To finish off the Popsicle Stick Horton Kid Craft – have children paint their popsicle stick design completely blue, as well as gluing the paper pieces and eyes/nose in place.
  • Once done, set aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly!

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
