Looking for a creative, fun project that doubles as a meaningful keepsake? A footprint and handprint lobster craft might just be the perfect activity. Not only will you end up with a delightful piece of artwork to cherish, but it also gives you a wonderful opportunity to capture the tiny hands and feet of your little one before they aren’t so little anymore.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or teacher, this project is a hit with kids and adults alike.

This blog will walk you through everything you need to know to create a footprint and handprint lobster keepsake. From gathering materials to step-by-step instructions and ideas to personalize your lobster, you’ll be equipped to make a craft that’s special and memorable.

A painted craft of a red crab, resembling a handprint lobster, made from a handprint and two red hand shapes for claws, with googly eyes and a small smile on white paper. The teal background features white and yellow stars.

Get your little ones in on the fun with this easy and creative lobster footprint/handprint keepsake craft! Perfect for a summer beach day activity, have your kids make something special to remember their time at the shore.

Craft Supplies:

Before getting started, make sure you have all the materials at hand. The good news? This project is easy to create with items you likely already have at home.

  • Washable Red Craft Paint
  • Brown Craft Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Small Paper Plate
  • Large Blank Canvas
  • Tons of Baby Wipes
  • optional supplies for this craft – medium sized wiggle eyes, school glue and black Sharpie marker

Directions:

Follow these simple steps to create your lobster canvas:

  • First things first – squirt your two shades of paint colors on the paper plate.
  • For your lobster, first paint one of your child’s feet completely. red.
  • Working quickly, press it down in the center of the blank canvas. Make sure you really press those toes down.
  • Now carefully lift up the foot to reveal the footprint design underneath. This is your lobster’s body. Be sure to wipe their foot clean with the baby wipes {and maybe a quick trip to the tub!}
  • Then, one at a time, paint the palms of your child’s hands completely red and press them on each side of the footprint, away from the toes. Use our pictures as an example. These are the lobster’s claws.
  • Again, use the baby wipes {and a quick trip to the sink} to remove excess paint!
  • To finish off your footprint & handprint lobster design, paint some lines from the lobster’s body to connect the hands.
  • If you like, glue on the wiggle eyes to give him life & add some brown “sand” on the bottom of the canvas, to make it look like the beach. I also painted some little red legs coming from his body.
  • And you are done! Let dry completely and display proudly.
  • As I always say, don’t forget to add the date & age on the back.
