Kids love painting, but sometimes a traditional paintbrush just does not spark that creative magic. If you want to mix up your afternoon art session, look no further than your kitchen drawer. We are using a trusty kitchen potato masher to create an adorable, textured black cat craft.
This potato masher stamped black cat craft is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary students. It combines sensory play with fine motor skill development, all while using basic household items. You do not need expensive art supplies or hours of prep time. You just need a bit of paint, some paper, and a readiness to get a little messy.
Materials You Need:
Before you invite the kids to the table, gather your supplies. Having everything within reach makes the crafting process much smoother.
- A potato masher: Look for one with a flat, circular base and a square grid pattern.
- Black washable craft paint: Washable paint is always the best choice when crafting with kids.
- A paper plate: This will serve as your paint palette. A paper plate makes cleanup a breeze.
- Cardstock or heavy paper: Regular printer paper might warp when wet. Choose white or lightly patterned cardstock for your background.
- Googly eyes: Grab a sheet of adhesive googly eyes in various sizes.
- Pink construction paper: You only need a small scrap to cut out little noses.
- A black marker: Use this to draw the ears and whiskers.
- A glue stick: To attach the noses if your googly eyes are already sticky. Kid-friendly washable glue works best.
- Child-safe scissors: For snipping the little paper noses.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Set up your art station by laying down some newspaper or a plastic tablecloth. Once your area is secure, follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Prep Your Paint Station
- Squirt a generous circle of black washable paint onto your paper plate. You want the puddle of paint to be slightly larger than the base of your potato masher. Press the potato masher firmly into the black paint. Wiggle it just a little bit to ensure the entire grid is evenly coated.
Step 2: Stamp Your Cat Faces
- Hand the paint-covered masher to your child. Instruct them to press the masher firmly onto their sheet of cardstock. Lift the masher straight up to reveal a perfect, textured black circle! Depending on the size of your paper, your child can stamp three to six circles on a single page. Make sure they leave a little bit of breathing room between each circle so they have space to draw the ears and whiskers later.
Step 3: Add the Purr-fect Details
- While the black paint dries, you can work on the facial features. Grab your pink construction paper and your scissors. Help your child cut out tiny triangles or small ovals to serve as the cat noses.
- Once the stamped paint is completely dry to the touch, it is time to assemble the faces. Have your child pick out two googly eyes for each stamped circle and press them firmly near the top center of the shape. Next, use the glue stick to attach the pink nose right below the eyes.
Step 4: Draw the Whiskers and Ears
- Now for the final touches that bring your black cats to life! Take your black marker and draw two small triangles on top of each stamped circle for the ears. Then, draw three quick horizontal lines extending outward from both sides of the circle to create the whiskers.
- Your potato masher stamped cats are now complete! All the craft to dry completely before displaying proudly!
