There’s something magical about watching little hands dab paint onto paper, especially when the result is a spooky-cute ghost ready for Halloween. This pom pom painted ghost craft is one of my favorite seasonal activities, and I think it’s about to become one of yours too.
The best part? It’s incredibly easy. Toddlers, preschoolers, and even older kids can all join in. The dabbing motion is perfect for tiny fingers, it helps build fine motor skills, and the colorful results look adorable on the fridge or classroom wall. Plus, I’m sharing a free printable ghost template to make setup a breeze.
Grab your supplies and let’s get crafting!
Craft Supplies:
Here’s everything you’ll want to gather before you start. Chances are, you already have most of these on hand.
- Black cardstock (or black construction paper)
- Ghost silhouette printable/template (from box.com – password is GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS2026)
- Pom-poms or cotton balls
- Wooden clothespins (to make easy paint dabbers)
- Acrylic or tempera paint in pink, yellow, green, purple, and orange
- Googly eyes
- Glue (school glue or a glue dot works great)
- Paint palette or paper plate
- Scissors (for grown-ups to cut the template)
That’s it! Simple supplies, big fun.
Directions:
Follow these easy steps and you’ll have a batch of ghostly masterpieces in no time.
Step 1: Print and Cut the Ghost Template
Print the free ghost silhouette template (linked above) and cut out the ghost shape. This paper cutout becomes your stencil, so keep those edges nice and clean.
Step 2: Place the Ghost on Black Paper
Set your ghost cutout in the center of the black cardstock. If you have little helpers who tend to bump things around, a small loop of tape on the back will hold the stencil in place while they paint.
Step 3: Make Your Pom Pom Dabbers
Clip a pom-pom or cotton ball into the end of a wooden clothespin. This gives kids an easy handle to hold and keeps their fingers (mostly) paint-free. Squeeze dollops of each paint color onto your palette or paper plate.
Step 4: Dab Paint Around the Ghost
Now for the fun part! Dip a dabber into paint and tap it all around the edges of the ghost cutout. Encourage kids to overlap the colors and dab right up against the stencil. The goal is a thick, colorful, textured border that hugs the ghost shape. Mix pink, yellow, green, purple, and orange for that festive Halloween glow.
Step 5: Let It Dry
Once the border looks full and vibrant, set the artwork aside to dry completely. This step matters, so resist the urge to peek early.
Step 6: Remove the Stencil
Carefully peel away the paper ghost cutout to reveal a crisp black ghost silhouette framed by all that colorful paint. This is the “ta-da!” moment kids love.
Step 7: Add the Googly Eyes
Glue two googly eyes near the top of the ghost to give it a friendly face. And just like that, your pom pom painted ghost is ready to display!
