Winter crafting has a special kind of magic. The air turns chilly, the days get shorter, and suddenly a quiet afternoon at the kitchen table becomes the coziest part of the week. Add a stack of paper plates, a little glue, and a few giggles, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a happy, creative day indoors.
This adorable paper plate penguin is one of our favorite winter crafts for little hands. It’s simple, budget-friendly, and made with supplies you probably already have in your craft bin. The best part is the tearing. Kids love ripping paper into scraps, and here that’s exactly what they’re supposed to do! Those torn black pieces layer together to create a fluffy, feathery look that makes each penguin one of a kind.
Whether you’re planning a classroom activity, a snow day project, or a sweet keepsake for the fridge, this cheerful little bird is sure to waddle right into your heart.
Craft Supplies:
- A sturdy white paper plate {one per craft}
- Black construction paper
- Yellow construction paper {the beak}
- Small white paper heart doily {the belly}
- Two large googly eyes
- School glue
- Scissors
Directions:
Step 1: Tear the Black Paper Into Pieces
Hand your little crafter a sheet or two of black construction paper and let the tearing begin! Encourage them to rip the paper into small and medium-sized pieces, roughly the size of a postage stamp or a bit bigger. Uneven, jagged edges are perfect here. They’ll look just like soft, ruffled feathers once they’re glued down.
Step 2: Glue the Torn Pieces All Over the Plate
Spread glue across the center of the paper plate, then start pressing the torn black pieces on top. Overlap them as you go so no white shows through in the middle. Keep adding pieces until the whole inner circle is covered.
Step 3: Add the Doily Chest
Now for the penguin’s snowy white tummy! Place the heart-shaped doily in the lower center of the plate with the point of the heart facing down. Add a few dots of glue to the back and press it firmly onto the black paper.
Step 4: Cut and Glue the Beak
Cut a small triangle from your yellow construction paper or cardstock. Glue it onto the top part of the doily with the point facing down, so it looks like a tiny beak.
Step 5: Give Your Penguin Eyes
Glue two large googly eyes just above the doily, side by side. This is the moment your penguin truly comes to life! Kids always light up when they see those wiggly eyes staring back at them.
Set your penguin flat in a safe spot and let it dry completely. A thick layer of school glue may take an hour or two to set.

There’s something truly special about watching kids create with their own two hands. The tearing, the gluing, the proud grin when they hold up their finished penguin all add up to simple, meaningful moments together. And those moments are what winter crafting is all about.
So pour some glue, grab that black paper, and let your little ones tear away. No two penguins will look exactly alike, and that’s what makes each one perfect. Happy crafting, and stay warm out there!
