Crafting with young children brings immense joy into the home or classroom. This Potato Masher Stamped Bumble Bee craft is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon making memories.

We love using everyday kitchen tools to create art. It sparks imagination and helps little ones develop fine motor skills.

You can easily pair this activity with a favorite spring book, like The Little Bee, to combine story time with hands-on creative play.

Craft Supplies:

  • Metal potato masher: A masher with a round grid pattern works best to create a honeycomb texture.
  • Bright yellow washable paint: Perfect for vibrant bee bodies.
  • A paper plate: To hold the paint.
  • Construction paper: Purple or blue makes a great background to help the yellow paint pop.
  • Black painter’s tape: This is our secret weapon for easy, mess-free bee stripes!
  • Black marker: To draw the final details.

Directions:

  1. Before you start, be sure to cover your work surface with an old tablecloth or newspaper.
  2. Squeeze a generous dollop of yellow paint onto the paper plate.
  3. Press the flat bottom of the potato masher directly into the yellow paint. Make sure the grid is completely coated.
  4. Press the masher firmly onto the construction paper. Lift it straight up to reveal a textured yellow circle.
  5. Repeat this step to make a whole swarm of bees across your page. Let the paint dry completely before moving to the next step.
  6. Here is the most fun part! Instead of painting tricky lines, we use black painter’s tape to create the bee stripes. Take a small strip of the tape and stick it horizontally across the middle of each yellow stamped circle. Painter’s tape is brilliant for this step. Kids can easily handle the tape, and it gives the bees a bold, clean look without any extra paint smears.
  7. Finally, grab your black marker. Draw two curved wings on the sides of each yellow circle.
  8. Next, draw two little antennae on top of each bee head. You can even add a tiny triangle at the back to make a stinger.
  9. Add any other embellishments you see fit to your potato masher stamped bees and let the entire paper dry completely, before you display it proudly for all to see!
