Looking for a fun way to keep kids entertained this summer? These Popsicle Stick and Craft Felt Mermaids are a fantastic afternoon project. They require only a few basic supplies and let children use their imagination to design their very own sea creatures.
Whether you need a quick activity for a hot afternoon or a creative classroom project, these adorable mermaids are simple to make and completely customizable. Here is exactly how you can create your own today!
Craft Supplies:
Gather these basic craft supplies before you begin:
- Wooden popsicle sticks: Jumbo or standard sizes both work well.
- Craft felt: Assorted vibrant colors like red, blue, orange, teal, and green.
- Markers: A fine-tip black marker for the face, plus various colors for the clothing.
- Craft glue: A strong liquid glue, such as Elmer’s Glue-All, works best to hold the felt to the wood.
- Scissors: For cutting out the felt shapes.
Directions:
Follow these quick steps to bring your mermaids to life.
- Start by giving your mermaid some personality. Use a thin black marker to draw simple closed eyes with eyelashes and a happy smile near the top of your wooden popsicle stick. Use colorful markers to draw the mermaid’s top directly onto the wood. Simply color a small section of the stick just below the face. You can add dots, stripes, or keep it a solid color.
- Grab your scissors and craft felt. For each mermaid, cut out a large, rounded shape for the hair. You can make it look like sweeping bangs or a big updo. Next, cut out a long, curved tail shape from a different color of felt, and snip two small fin pieces for the very bottom.
- Apply a generous dab of craft glue to attach the back of the popsicle stick to your felt hair piece. Next, glue the felt tail to the bottom half of the stick. Finish the assembly by gluing the two small fins to the very bottom of the tail.
- Set your finished mermaids flat on a table to dry completely. Liquid glue usually takes an hour or two to fully set. Once dry, they are ready for playtime!
