We love simple and creative activities that let kids get a little messy while having a ton of fun. This fork-painted chicken craft is a fantastic way to keep little hands busy this spring season!

Using a plastic fork instead of a paintbrush creates an amazing feathered texture that brings this silly bird to life. It is the perfect afternoon project for your classroom or kitchen table.

Craft Supplies:

Gather these simple supplies. You likely have most of them in your craft drawer already!

  • Plastic Fork
  • White Craft Paint
  • Light Blue Colored Cardstock Paper
  • Yellow & Red Cardstock Paper
  • Scissors
  • School Glue
  • Large Wiggle Eyes – two per craft

Directions:

Before you begin, adults may want to lay out newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to make cleanup easy and keep the workspace mess-free.

  • First, squirt some white paint in the center of your light blue colored cardstock. You don’t need a lot; the size of a quarter is a good starting point.
  • Have children take their fork – which is their “paint brush” and spread the paint ALL around to make the feathers of the chicken. Just make sure they keep the paint on the paper, but they can move it anywhere and in any design, shape, or angle they like to create that scruffy texture.
  • Once they are done creating the “feathers,” set it aside.
  • Grab the remaining cardstock paper and scissors.
  • Trace your child’s hand on the red construction paper and cut it out. This handprint will become the chicken’s bright red comb.
  • Next, cut a small triangle from the yellow paper to serve as the beak.
  • Finally, the last step of this fork painted chick craft: Glue all your cardstock pieces to the painted piece of paper to bring his face to life.
  • Set aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly!

Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
