Story time just got a lot more fun! If you and your little ones love the hilarious “Pigeon” book series by Mo Willems, we have the perfect activity for you. This simple art project lets kids bring their favorite grumpy bird to life using a common kitchen tool. It is incredibly easy to set up, making it a fantastic choice for parents, teachers, and caregivers who want a quick, hands-on activity.
Materials Needed
You only need a few basic craft supplies and a trip to your kitchen drawer to get started:
- A metal potato masher: Look for one with a grid or waffle pattern on the bottom.
- Blue washable paint: This matches our favorite pigeon perfectly.
- A paper plate: You will use this as a paint palette.
- Construction paper: White or light blue works great for the background.
- Googly eyes: The bigger, the better!
- Yellow construction paper: You need a small piece to create the beaks.
- Glue: A regular glue stick or school glue will do the trick.
- Scissors: For cutting out the beaks.
Steps to Create
Follow these simple steps to make your own flock of pigeons:
- Prepare the paint station: Squirt a generous amount of blue paint onto your paper plate. Spread it around a bit so the potato masher can easily pick up the color.
- Stamp the pigeon heads: Have your child dip the flat, grid side of the potato masher into the blue paint. Make sure the bottom gets a nice, even coat. Press the masher firmly onto the construction paper and lift straight up. You will see a fun, textured blue circle. Repeat this step to make as many pigeon heads as you want!
- Cut out the beaks: While you wait a few minutes for the blue paint to dry, grab your scissors and the yellow paper. Cut out small triangles to serve as the pigeon beaks.
- Bring the pigeons to life: Once the blue stamped circles are dry, it is time to add the final details. Glue one large googly eye near the top of each blue circle. Then, glue a yellow paper triangle right next to the eye to complete the face.
