Military children show incredible resilience, strength, and adaptability every single day. Whether they are moving to a new duty station or navigating a parent’s deployment, these kids face unique challenges with remarkable courage.
To celebrate their unique journey, we put together a simple, meaningful craft: the “Five Reasons Why I’m Proud to Be a Military Child” handprint keepsake. This activity is perfect for the Month of the Military Child in April, giving parents, teachers, and support organizations a beautiful way to help kids reflect on the positive aspects of their military lifestyle. It is a wonderful opportunity to build self-esteem and create a treasured memory.
Materials You Need
Gather a few basic art supplies before you start. You will need:
- Colored cardstock or construction paper: Light blue (for the background), purple (for the handprint), light purple (for the hearts).
- A pencil: For tracing the handprint.
- Scissors: To cut out the handprint.
- Heart shaped paper punch: For the five hearts.
- Glue stick or liquid glue: To assemble the craft.
- Markers or pens: To write the titles and the five reasons.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these simple steps to bring this meaningful keepsake to life.
1. Prepare the Background
Take a sheet of light blue paper to use as your canvas. At the top center, use a dark marker to write, “Five reasons why.” At the very bottom center, write, “I’m proud to be a military child.” You can also add the current year, like “’26,” to make it a true time capsule keepsake.
2. Trace and Cut the Handprint
Ask the child to place their hand flat on a piece of purple paper. Spread the fingers slightly apart. Carefully trace around their hand with a pencil, then cut the handprint out. Glue this handprint directly into the center of your light blue background paper.
3. Create the Hearts
Use the paper heart punch to “punch” out five small hearts from the light purple paper.
4. Write Down the Reasons
This is the most important part of the activity. Sit down with the child and brainstorm five things they love about being a military kid. Write one reason on each pink heart. Some great examples include:
- Get to travel
- So many friends
- Makes me strong
- Pride
- Community
5. Assemble the Keepsake
Glue one light purple heart onto the tip of each finger on the dark purple handprint. Let the glue dry completely.
