Groundhog Day is one of those quirky, delightful holidays that kids absolutely love. There’s something magical about the idea that a fuzzy little creature popping out of a hole can predict the weather. Will he see his shadow? Will we have six more weeks of winter or an early spring? While we wait for the big prediction, why not channel that excitement into a creative project?
This Fork Painted Groundhog craft is the perfect way to celebrate. It uses a fun, unconventional painting technique – using a plastic fork instead of a brush, you can create the perfect “furry” texture for your groundhog friend. It’s messy enough to be fun, but simple enough that it won’t leave you scrubbing the table for hours.
Whether you are a teacher looking for a classroom activity or a parent wanting a rainy-day project, this little groundhog is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

Craft Supplies:
Before you start, gather these simple supplies. You likely have most of them in your craft drawer already!
- Plastic Fork
- Brown Craft Paint
- Choice of Color Cardstock Paper
- White, Black and Brown Cardstock Paper
- Scissors
- School Glue
- Large Wiggle Eyes
Directions:
Before you begin, adults may want to lay out newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to make cleanup easy and keep the workspace mess-free.
- First, squirt some brown paint in the center of your light-colored cardstock. You don’t need a lot; the size of a quarter is a good starting point.
- Have children take their fork – which is their “paint brush” and spread the paint ALL around to make the fur of their groundhog. Just make sure they keep the paint on the paper, but they can move it anywhere and in any design, shape, or angle they like to create that scruffy texture.
- Once they are done creating the “fur,” set it aside.
- Grab the remaining cardstock paper and scissors.
- Cut out small round ears, a heart shaped nose, and perhaps two rectangular teeth for the groundhog.
- Finally, the last step of this fork painted groundhog craft: Glue all your cardstock pieces to the painted piece of paper to bring his face to life.
- Set aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly!
