Cupcake Liner Cookie Craft Idea For Kids

Children’s book “The Cookie Fiasco”, a blue paper with two brown cookie crafts, glue stick, brown paint, cotton swabs, cupcake liner, and colorful paper arranged on a table. Text: @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS.

Crafting with kids does not have to be messy or complicated. Sometimes the best activities use basic supplies you already have tucked away in your kitchen cupboards or art cart. If you need a simple afternoon activity, this cupcake liner chocolate chip cookie craft brings creativity and reading together seamlessly.

We paired this fun project with the hilarious children’s book The Cookie Fiasco. It is the perfect way to spend quality time together while building fine motor skills and encouraging a love for reading. Plus, the final result looks cute enough to eat!

Materials You Will Need

You only need a handful of inexpensive items for this project. Gather the following supplies to get started:

  • Brown cupcake liners
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Cotton swabs
  • Light blue cardstock (or any color of construction paper for the background)
  • A washable school glue stick

Step-by-Step Instructions

This quick tutorial is designed to be completely stress-free. Set up your craft area and let your little ones take the lead.

Step 1: Prep the Cookies

Start by taking your brown cupcake liners and flattening them out with your hands. You want them to lay as flat as possible so they look like round cookies. If your kids struggle to press them down, gently crease the ruffled edges with your fingers.

Step 2: Glue Them Down

Use your washable glue stick to apply a generous amount of glue to the back of each flattened cupcake liner. Press the liners firmly onto your light blue cardstock.

Step 3: Add the Chocolate Chips

Now comes the best part. Pour a tiny drop of black acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Give your child a cotton swab and have them dip one end into the black paint. Press the painted cotton swab onto the brown cupcake liners to create little chocolate chips.

Step 4: Let It Dry

Encourage your kids to add as many or as few chocolate chips as they want. Once they finish decorating, set the cardstock aside in a safe place to dry completely.

Once the paint dries, the fun does not have to stop. Ask your kids to count how many chocolate chips they put on each cookie. You can ask them questions like, “Which cookie has the most chips?” or “If we eat one cookie, how many are left?”

Display the finished artwork on your fridge or a bulletin board as a proud reminder of their creative afternoon. Grab your art supplies, read a great book, and enjoy this simple craft today! Happy crafting, my friends!
