This torn paper Halloween moon is one of the sweetest little crafts we’ve made this fall! It has a glowing yellow crescent moon, a few silly thumbprint bats, and a keepsake saying that makes parents melt. It’s simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers, but it still looks charming enough to hang on the fridge all October long.
Kids get to do two of their favorite things in one project: tear paper and press their fingers into an ink pad. Those little thumbprints turn into the cutest bats once you add tiny ears, wings, eyes, and fangs.
The finished craft also makes a lovely take-home gift. Every bat is a real print from your child’s finger, so it captures just how small those hands are right now. That’s the kind of thing families want to save for years.
Let’s make a glowing Halloween moon!
Craft Supplies:
You probably have most of these in your craft closet already:
- Yellow Construction Paper
- Gray Cardstock Paper
- Halloween Moon Printable – from box.com – password is GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS2026
- School Glue
- Black Washable Ink Pad
- Black Marker
- Embellishments
Quick tip: Grey cardstock gives the craft a soft, nighttime look and makes the yellow moon really pop. If you only have white cardstock, it still works great!
Directions:
Follow these easy steps to create your “cute not scary” Halloween moon card:
- Print the free Halloween moon template onto grey cardstock. The template includes a large crescent moon outline in the center and the keepsake saying at the bottom.
- Give your little one a sheet of yellow construction paper and let them tear it into small pieces. Pieces about the size of a postage stamp or a quarter work well. Squares, strips, and wonky shapes are all perfect!
- Add glue to one small section of the moon at a time. Then have your child press the yellow pieces onto the glue. Keep going until the whole crescent is covered.
- Now for the fun part! Have your child press their thumb (or pointer finger) onto the black ink pad. Then press it firmly onto the grey cardstock to make a bat body. Be sure to have them scatter a few around the moon design.
- Once done with adding the fingerprints, help them add the details with a black marker. They can draw on wings, ears, eyes and fangs.
- And that’s it! Kids can add any other embellishments they see fit but for most part, you can now let it dry completely and then display {and/or gift away} proudly!
