Brown paper showcases three red apple prints, created using a potato masher stamped craft technique. A green and brown marker and a plate with red paint sit nearby. The username @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS is labeled at the bottom.

Looking for a fall craft for kids that’s simple, mess-friendly, and turns out adorable every time? This potato masher stamped apple craft uses a kitchen tool you already own to make textured red apples in seconds. Kids press, stamp, and doodle their way to a cheerful autumn picture, and you get an easy activity that keeps little hands busy on a cool afternoon.

The best part is how forgiving it is. Every apple looks a little different thanks to the lattice pattern from the masher, so there’s no “wrong” way to do it. Grab your supplies and let’s make some apples.

Craft Supplies:

Gather these before you start so the fun keeps rolling:

  • Brown cardstock – one sheet per child for that warm, autumn background
  • Red acrylic paint – washable if you have it, since acrylic can stain
  • Small paper plate – works great as a paint palette
  • Metal potato masher – the wire-style masher makes the best crisscross print
  • Crayola markers – one brown for the stems, one green for the leaves
  • Old shirt or smock and a covered table for easy cleanup

Directions:

Follow these five simple steps and you’ll have a finished apple craft in no time.

1. Squeeze the paint. Add a small pool of red acrylic paint onto the paper plate. A little goes a long way, so start small and add more if you need it.

2. Press the masher into the paint. Dip the flat bottom of the potato masher straight down into the paint. Wiggle it gently so the wires pick up an even coat.

3. Stamp the apples. Press the masher firmly onto the brown cardstock, then lift it straight up. Repeat to make three apples in a triangle shape, or as many as your child wants.

4. Let it dry. Set the paper aside until the paint is completely dry to the touch. Rushing this step can smudge those crisp apple shapes.

5. Add stems and leaves. Use the brown marker to draw a short stem at the top of each apple, then use the green marker to add a little leaf beside each stem. Done!

Once your apples are dry, find a great spot to display them. Tape them to the fridge, string them up as a garland across a window, or frame one as a little piece of seasonal wall art. These make sweet gifts too — grandparents especially love receiving something handmade straight from the kids.

The handle of the potato masher and craft supplies are visible. @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS is written.

That’s all it takes to turn a plain sheet of cardstock into a bright bunch of fall apples. This craft celebrates the season, builds little motor skills, and gives kids something to be proud of.

Give it a try with your crew this week — you might be surprised how something as simple as a kitchen tool and a paper plate can turn into a full afternoon of creative fun. That’s honestly one of my favorite things about crafts like this one. There’s no special equipment, no fancy art supplies, and no pressure to make it perfect. Just paint, paper, and a whole lot of happy little hands. Happy crafting, my friends!
