A butterfly craft made with pink painted wings, a craft stick body with a smiley face, and black antennae, displayed with felt hearts, a glue stick, and pink paper flowers. @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS text at the bottom.

Grab a cake server from your kitchen drawer, because you’re about to turn it into the coolest painting tool your kids have ever used. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll know how to stamp gorgeous textured butterfly wings using nothing but paint and an icing spatula. It’s fast, mess-friendly, and works for kids of all ages.

Here’s the magic: the ridges and edges of a pie server leave behind a beautiful ribbed print when pressed into paint. Those prints become butterfly wings full of texture and character. No fancy stamps needed!

This craft is perfect for a rainy afternoon at home, a classroom art station, or a quick seasonal project. Let’s make one together.

Craft Supplies:

  • Cardstock paper – any color you like
  • A cake server or icing spatula (the star of the show!)
  • Acrylic or washable paint
  • A paper plate for your paint palette
  • A wooden popsicle or craft stick
  • A marker
  • Elmer’s washable glue stick
  • Optional: loose craft glitter

A quick tip before you start: cover your table with newspaper or a plastic mat. Washable paint cleans up easily, but a little prep saves you stress later.

Directions:

Step 1: Load up your pie server

Squeeze a blob of paint onto your paper plate. Dip the flat side of the cake server in and spread the paint evenly across it.

Common mistake to avoid: Don’t overload the server with paint. A thin, even coat gives you those crisp textured lines. Too much paint just makes a blob.

Step 2: Stamp your first wing

Press the painted side firmly onto your cardstock, then lift straight up. You’ll see a beautiful ribbed print appear like magic.

Step 3: Build the X shape

Repeat the stamping to create four wings arranged in an “X” pattern. Two prints on top, two on the bottom, meeting in the center. Re-coat the server with paint between each press.

Micro example: Picture the letter X on your paper. Each arm of the X is one wing. Leave a small gap down the middle for the butterfly’s body.

Step 4: Decorate (optional)

Sprinkle glitter over the wet paint for extra flair. This is where kids get to make it their own.

Step 5: Let it dry

Set the paper aside and let the wings dry completely. This usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Skipping this step will smudge your hard work.

Step 6: Add the body

Once dry, run your glue stick along the back of a wooden popsicle stick. Press it down vertically in the center of the wings, right where the X meets.

Step 7: Draw the face

Use your marker to add two small dots for eyes and a curved line for a smile near the top of the stick. Instant personality!

Step 8: Draw the antennae

Draw two curved lines rising from the top of the stick onto the paper. Finish each with a small dot or a little spiral. Your butterfly is ready to fly.
